Probably their most divisive album?

Is it just all the spoken word and general absence of vocal hooks that turns people off? Musically, it's pretty on point, and very much in their language.

I wonder if, to an extent, the 0.0 review it got from Pitchfork kind of saddled it with a reputation that came to precede it for a while. I was certainly conscious of that review before I'd heard the album, and I remember being surprised upon hearing the record how relatively conventional of a SY record it was, given its outlier reputation.

That's fair. I also got the album for $2 in 2013, so the stakes were pretty low. I was expecting a completely unlistenable, pretentious mess, and I was pleasantly surprised. I mean, no arguments that it's a fair bit more impenetrable than something like Daydream Nation or A Thousand Leaves, but it certainly didn't live up to its reputation as this totally off-brand thing with no conventionally pleasing qualities.
