Mark Kozelek | Sun Kil Moon | Red House Painters

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Finally listened to his newest album. It has some really cool musical moments, but his rambling lyrics and delivery was tiresome and trite 4 albums ago.

Hey! Another album, this one Sun Kil Moon.

Listened twice. It's not good.

It's getting to the point where I really only listen to Red House Painters, his pre-Benji Sun Kil Moon stuff and Perils from the Sea.

I wish he'd just stop now.

Heard All Mixed Up on the radio today which I enjoy quite a bit but just the thought of Kozelek as a person irritates the shit out of me now.

I care less about his personality and more about the fact that he's made like 8 mediocre to bad albums in a row, with the possible exception being the Jesu/Sun Kil Moon record.

Yeah it was easy to overlook what a dick the guy was when he was making listenable music. He's sucked for a long time, even when people were trying to pretend Benji was good.

Benji was incredible, though.

I haven't listened to every post-Benji record, but the only one that I found totally unlistenable was Yellow Kitchen. Both SKM/Jesu records had really good stuff, I liked the MK self-titled record, and Universal Themes was alright--each of these had some pretty disappointing lows, but I think when MK is on he can still deliver some memorable textures and lyrics. But I'm not going to argue with anyone about these records, because I can totally understand being turned off by them, considering how much his style and delivery has changed. I will totally stand for Benji, though--it might not be as good front-to-back as some of the other SKM records, but it has some of my favorite MK tunes on it. I love both the propellent energy of Richard Ramirez and the meandering drone of Carissa and Micheline, and I think some of the songs about his childhood come across as incredibly nostalgic in a way that doesn't see that word as a pejorative.

There's probably one too many songs about his family members who blew themselves up by burning trash in their front yards, but that's Ohio for you.

I never (and I mean never) have a legitimately emotional response to music but multiple songs on Benji just cut right through me.

I also loved Benji. Richard Ramirez and Micheline are among his best songs.

Listened to Benji again after that post and man, it's still as good as ever.

It also reminded me of this which I also listened to again and still find hilariously funny:

Benji is incredible and I refuse to listen to any SKM album since then.

That diss track aimed at Michael Jackson he made with Justin from Godflesh recently-ish was amazing and hilarious. It was like a good version of LULU.
