Re: 2019-09-28: Dana Point, California (Ed Only)
A couple notes from memory:
Ed was chatty last night. He went had spoke of Daniel Johnson before Walking the Cow, about a paddle out ceremony before Wildflowers, ahout how great of a person Barack Obama is, the Beatles influence before he played Help (I think played more than a couple verses?), and even mentioned The West Memphis Three. Which is fine but in but particularly at a festival you want to hear music and the crowd got a little restless because he kept doing it; the meatheads near me made some "play songs" type comments and I didn't entirely disagree with their sentiment.
When they were setting up the stage I saw them roll some extra chairs & stands and immediately realized he had a string quartet accompanying him. When I mentioned to a couple people around me were self proclaimed "big Pearl Jam fans" they didn't seem as excited by the prospect as I was.
The opening sting intro sounded to me like the start of Pinball Wizard before becoming the first stanza of Alive.
I mentioned I Am Mine had a major flub early on and he messed up again at the end. But that was the only mess up of any significance.
Wishlist and Immortality were both electric I know, pretty much everything else was acoustic before Hard Sun.
Can't Keep was the only uke song of the night and it was accompanied by strings and that created a very similar sound to me of the full band version but without percussion.
Corduroy, Black, and Betterman were also accompanied by the quartet. I've heard each of these songs live dozens of times but really enjoyed the versions tonight.
There was no real encore break as Ed left the stage for the quartet to play Jeremy, similar to the slow version played a few times by the band in the mid 90s.
Glenn came out for a couple songs and Ed thanked all those who made the night possible and several of the day's act came out to back up Hard Sun vocals. I left towards the end, thinking that was it, and was surprised when Free World started up as I was walking out.
I mentioned the meathead bros, maybe it was just dumb luck to have a couple around me. They showed up just before Incubus, someone was nice enough to save them spot right in front of me. I was up fairly close, maybe 12-15 people behind the front railing and dead center. But I decided to move back about a half way through the main set and it took me a while to find a place, so that was distracting too.
This was my second Ohana and the crowd was noticeably thicker than my first. Still a good, friendly vibe for the most part but not as chill as before.
This was also my first festival in a marijuana legal state. I didn't notice any more or less than any other festival, just more open. The meathead bros had a couple fatties with them they passed around too.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed myself and glad I went. I was distracted from the main reason for going a few times; Ed played a great set but atmosphere for me wasn't as almost perfect as my first Ohana.

I know Ed popped up with the Chili Peppers for their Just What I Needed cover; any other Ed appearances yesterday?

Would like more rock from the Ed solo shows. But that Lukas Nelson song was interesting.

yeah, he sounds so fucking good in that outing. I wish Ed at least had a more rock oriented solo career. Do something with Jackie I and Flea or another bass player.tragabigzanda wrote:Fucking hell would it be so hard for them to turn in a record of straight-forward Neil Young / Tom Petty rockers that aren't mixed into a wall of glass?

More than ever, Pearl Jam need Jack Irons to get things back on track.
