Yesterday I watched this gorgeous Icelandic movie called Woman at War

The film is a black comedy with a strong emotional core and a surrealist bent. It uses this really interesting trick where the score is both diegetic and non diegetic at the same time -- that is to say: the music is played live by musicians who appear on screen and sometimes interact with the environment, but it's also meant to exist only in the main character's head to comment on their emotional state and not actually within the reality of the film. I thought that was really cool.

It is being remade in America by Jodie Foster, but I very much doubt they keep the utter weirdness of it. Check it out if you can.

I watched Ma last night. I was so pissed they didn't kill off the people I wanted them to.

Damn, i just love Aster. His framing, his fucked up mind...I loved the first half of the movie, and then it kinda goes nowhere till that ending. So fucked up.

Director's cut[edit]

Aster's original 171-minute cut of the film, which A24 asked Aster to trim down for a wide theatrical release, had its world premiere at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City as part of its Scary Movies XII lineup on August 17, 2019.[14] It was released nationwide on August 30, 2019 and will be available exclusively on Apple TV with the digital release on September 24, 2019.[15]
damn it wtf.

The director's cut/distribution cut question is so annoying. I'm really looking forward to seeing Loro but the US cut is almost an hour shorter than the Italian version for the purpose of the awards circuit. Is it worth seeking out the longer one?

Watched The A-Team the other day. It was alright and just dumb enough that it felt like a bunch of guys having fun instead of a movie.

Seven Psychopaths. Why are so many name actors in this shitty movie?

Seven Psychopaths was an interesting flick, not at all what I was expecting. Though I read the wiki for it and realized I should have expected that since it was the same guy as In Bruges. Weird that Sam Rockwell ended up playing the same basic person three years later in Mr. Right.

Watched Rocketman last week on the plane. Inevitably it was going to be compared to Bohemian Rhapsody but they take two different approaches. I liked it fine, and of course the music is great, but doubt I will rewatch. It felt like it was ready made for a stage adaptation though.

Hereditary. That was a ton of fun. I really enjoyed it. A couple of things in that movie genuinely scared me, which doesn't happen often. It's been a long time since I've been disturbed by an image or a moment in a movie on that particular level.
