I don't understand. You said you're not defining her by Luke. But the only way to reconcile the above post is if you are defining her character by Luke. It was never canon to Lucas, regardless of the quality or lack of. And it would never be canon under Disney. Still think you sound a bit harsh about it. Most readers think the best ever Star Wars books are among the now non canon, and Disney has borrowed quite a bit from it.dimejinky99 wrote:Nope. They had nobody overseeing it. I said i didnt mention her interaction with Luke at all. That was you. All im saying is that she was an important character because of a few things. You want a new character named Mara Jade? Fine. Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
There were several levels of canon under Lucas (pre-Disney). Lucas was very specific and adamant about certain eras. He approved the content all of Zahn's books. Though he never called it "official canon" he approved of the stories.Anders wrote:It was never canon to Lucas, regardless of the quality or lack of. And it would never be canon under Disney. Yeah, the first trilogy of books after Jedi is awesome. They really knew how to write Leia, Luke and Han.Anders wrote:It was never canon to Lucas, regardless of the quality or lack of. Please answer my question. In your post, why would it not be Mara Jade?

Joe you are being impossible. Mara Jade was the hand of the emperor, an assassin. She also became a smuggler and then Luke´s wife and mother of their child.
If you want a new character...why called her Mara Jade? And if you bring her..like Dime said...you would have to written something compelling for brining her back.

Why not just have that exact same character, called Mara Jade who does all of those exact same things except hook up with Luke? Why does that bother you so much?

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
You don't have to answer, by the way. CLEARLY the only issue you have with the character is her relationship with Luke. You say that's not true, that you didn't bring that up, but there's no other logical explanation.

I want a big tear jerker scene in this film. Sobbing openly in the cinema during a new Star Wars film is now something I come to look forward to.
Wonder what it could be

I dont even care about Luke´s relationship. But why call Mara Jade a new character when you already tossed her out? I dont get it.
She is not mention at all in all the new canon stuff, movies, series, games, books, comic books...now she is coming back as the hand of the emperor?
You clearly havent read the books. You would understand this one better.

I've seen some conflicting articles about this, but there is also this direct quote from Lucas:durdencommatyler wrote:There were several levels of canon under Lucas (pre-Disney). Lucas LOATHED the character. She was one of his biggest regrets about letting the Eu and writers run around it unchecked.
“I don’t read that stuff. I haven’t read any of the novels. I don’t know anything about that world. That’s a different world than my world. But I do try to keep it consistent. The way I do it now is they have a Star Wars Encyclopedia. So if I come up with a name or something else, I look it up and see if it has already been used. When I said [other people] could make their own Star Wars stories, we decided that, like Star Trek, we would have two universes: My universe and then this other one. They try to make their universe as consistent with mine as possible, but obviously they get enthusiastic and want to go off in other directions.” – George Lucas
Despite this, he supposedly really liked Shadows of the Empire.
In 2008 he said:
"It’s a certain story about Anakin Skywalker and once Anakin Skywalker dies, that’s kind of the end of the story. There is no story about Luke Skywalker, I mean apart from the books. But there’s three worlds: There’s my world that I made up, there’s the licensing world that’s the books, the comics, all that kind of stuff, the games, which is their world, and then there’s the fans’ world, which is also very rich in imagination, but they don’t always mesh. All I’m in charge of is my world. I can’t be in charge of those other people’s world, because I can’t keep up with it."
And in 2007:
“Howard tries to be consistent but sometimes he goes off on tangents and it’s hard to hold him back. He once said to me that there are two Star Trek universes: there’s the TV show and then there’s all the spin-offs. He said that these were completely different and didn’t have anything to do with each other. So I said, ‘OK, go ahead.’”
"While many EU fans cite Lucas’ involvement with the EU as evidence for his canonical support, these claims are largely exaggerated, with Chee stating that Lucas “for the most part, was hands off.”"

Some of the stuff Disney/Lucasfilm has taken from the now 100% non canon extended universe it's a long list):
https://io9.gizmodo.com/everything-star ... 1792224856
And this is two years ago, they are constantly reintroducing various stuff, but now in line with current canon.
