Turkey is primarily a refiner and transporter of oil. They have some fields, but the vast majority of the oil that travels through Turkey is not Turkish.

Their primary supplier right now is Russia. Russia currently sells a million tons of oil a month to Turkey for refining, or nearly 47% of Turkey’s total imports. They acquired this lucrative deal thanks to Trump-ordered, US-guided sanctions on Iranian oil, which forced Turkey to look elsewhere.

If oil control is the end all be all of Middle East politics, why is Russia helping Turkey become less dependent on them at the cost of billions? What do you think is their ambition here? Side question: why is Russia suddenly suggesting that Turkey, of all countries, belongs in the G8? As late as 2015, these two countries were so close to conflict that the Russian ambassador to Turkey was assassinated and Turkish forces downed a Russian fighter in Turkish airspace.

Now, please, as a favor, articulate your actual perceptions of world events and lay out the rationale behind those perceptions, instead of relying on sarcasm or pretending that a question is invalid depending on who asked it. I’d genuinely like to know your full, expressed thoughts. What specifically are you referring to here? The only way I can make sense of this question in reference to my post is that you think Trump's withdrawal is a favor to Putin and his apparent ally Turkey (edit: but has nothing to do with oil). Is that what you are saying?

Another way you could look at it (that doesn't involve such a convoluted conspiracy) is that America allowing Turkey greater access to Syrian oil would make Turkey less reliant on Russian oil, thus weakening Russia. Sounds like two powers fighting over Turkey's favor (using oil). In other words: business as usual.

2015 was an eternity ago, and if I remember the diplomat wasn't killed by Erdogan.

An Iran powerful enough to occupy US focus is of great interest to Russia (reverse Afghanistan) A divided NATO is of great interest to Russia. Allowing Russians access to NATO weapons inside Turkey is of great interest as well. Stomping out US allied (until Trump) Kurds by resettling refugees would be a bonus

NATO weapons in Turkey is probably an issue on it's own, but the rest boils down to oil IMO. Even NATO's existence itself post-cold war is probably because of oil.

But at this point I'm not sure if anyone knows what they are fighting for anymore, or who is on which side.
