This is exactly how the Sox won the WS last year though.MadTIGERmaN wrote:I have NEVER understood bringing a starter into a game in relief in the playoffs. I don't care if hes your best pitcher.

Teams mostly do it because it's generally a really effective strategy.MadTIGERmaN wrote:I have NEVER understood bringing a starter into a game in relief in the playoffs. I don't care if hes your best pitcher.

and with the information available today teams aren't playing/managing like it's 1968.philpritchard wrote:Teams mostly do it because it's generally a really effective strategy.MadTIGERmaN wrote:I have NEVER understood bringing a starter into a game in relief in the playoffs. Its probably only worked as much as it has, because of the quality of pitcher they are doing it with, and the quality of their bullpens.Simple Torture wrote:Hello, it's Arizona 2001 calling.cutuphalfdead wrote:This is exactly how the Sox won the WS last year though.MadTIGERmaN wrote:I have NEVER understood bringing a starter into a game in relief in the playoffs. Its not like they are bringing in a number 4 starter to close it out with Mariano sitting in the pen.
As for not managing like its 1968... Warren Spahn had 28 saves throughout his career, he was always available
and holy, from age 36 - 42, he led the league each year in complete games. 5 of those years he led the league in wins, and 2 of them he led in innings pitched.

Re: MLB
That’s exactly what I was going to say. Of course they aren’t throwing their shitty 4th or 5th starter. They already have shitty bullpen guys that can pitch shitty relief innings, they don’t need an end of the rotation dude for that. They are bringing in aces in relief BECAUSE it’s generally more successful and they trust their best pitcher(s) in the biggest spots most - regardless of the inning.philpritchard wrote:But... that's the whole point.MadTIGERmaN wrote:Its probably only worked as much as it has, because of the quality of pitcher they are doing it with, and the quality of their bullpens.Simple Torture wrote:Hello, it's Arizona 2001 calling.cutuphalfdead wrote:This is exactly how the Sox won the WS last year though.MadTIGERmaN wrote:I have NEVER understood bringing a starter into a game in relief in the playoffs. This. Astros letting their series go five games and having to use Cole in game five is a big plus for the Yankees.EJ wrote:Yanks in 6.

Might be the first time I ever pull for the Cards ever.
I had an uncle from St Louis, who every time he would visit would tell a story about (fill in some pointless fishing/hunting/random story) then when he gets to the... what year was it, 82? wait no, that's when the Cards beat the Brewers. Every. Damn. Time.
