Really, Backspacer is just a half baked album. So much of it is yummy even with the excess chocolate chips and unnecessary sprinkles. But the rest of it is an uncooked mess. Which I'll still eat, don't get me wrong! But it gives me a stomach ache, just the same.

Same problem as S/T every PJ album, yep.

But every song was good back then, so we didn't care. These days, I find myself wanting to rearrange the albums so that the bad songs might not sound so bad.
I'd like to enter into the official record, The People's exhibit A: Binaural.
I always thought the need to retrack Binaural was pretty ridiculous. Yes, what was left off is frustrating. But what's left, man it's good.

That was more in reference to your "back then every song was good" comment. But, yeah. I do think Fatal, In the Moonlight, Sad and Education would have made it a better album. But, yeah, it's all nonsense. Binaural is fine as is.

Just Breathe is such a strange song for me. I go back and forth from really liking it to being a little irritated by it in one listening. It has such a lovely melody but Eddie sings it in such a strange and affected (I'm not sure thats the word I'm looking for) way. And those Uhhh Huuuuhs...But then it just sounds so beautiful but then the chorus is slightly over the top with those strings. I will never make up my mind. :haha:

Edit: Stop posting so much while I type my posts.

I think BS is a really good record. Its a step out of their confort zone in the way they approach to it, making everything simpler than on the previous albums ( the band specially talks about ST vs BS in the way they were made) and leaving the melody and "pop" arrangements on porpouse.
The production is ok, its just too polished for a PJ album, too poppy, too mainstream..and some songs need that and others need a different approach.
I do believe they should have done another album sooner.
BONE FUCKIN´ TOMAHAWK.

:gomez:

Using your own analogy, I'd consider Speed of Sound burnt. BUUURRRNNNTTT. Charred and blackened. The dough tasted great, but they fucked it up. JB and the end too for that matter, though not as bad.

Oh heavens no!

Only that I like some of the leftovers more. Every song on Binaural is good (except MAYBE soon forget) to great.

Part of me agrees with this. But I mostly think that we're more likely to get a different album now. They were about to make Backspacer 2... We might still get that, don't get me wrong, but it's more likely that they were in a different head space in the next session. That might mean LB is a really eclectic mix of light and dark. That would be fine by me.

Pearl Jam have never really repeated themselves, for better or worse. Sure, there are songs, but there aren't really two albums that are trying to do the same thing. I'm confident that trend will continue. If it doesn't... if LB is really another Backspacer, that will be a huge red flag for me.

 Those are some stunning rejects, for sure.

I'm listening to Backspacer right now. And I hate to admit this, but Gonna See My Friend really doesn't do much for me, either. I mean, guys, The Fixer is better. Sorry.

No need to apologise. I mean, Last Exit is better than Whipping.

Its growing on me, ever since i heard the demo and realized how good of a song it is, I've kinda been able to look past the extra stuff i don't love.

This isn't totally fair. I like GSMF. I just don't think it's in the top half of songs on this album. It's good, but there is plenty more to like about Backspacer.
