Most of my conversations about PJ IRL are trying to convince people they don’t (didn’t) suck. To this day all people seem to know is Ten and Vs. but know very little of the Vitalogy through Riot Act run. When I play them anti Ten songs, like Who You Are, Tremor Christ, BOJ, Of The Girl, All Night, Insignificance, I Got Shit, etc...they generally seem to be pleasantly surprised.

This happened a lot from the mid 90s up until about Riot Act.

Heh. Let them listen to that pleb shit. If they can't understand something like Of The Girl then they're lost.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Pearl Jam. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of musical theory most of the songs will go over a typical listener's head. There's also Eddie's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his lyrics - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realize that they're not just fun rockers - they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Pearl Jam truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the anguish in an Eddie lyric like "he lit a match and laid in bed" which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Eddie's genius unfolds itself on their iPods. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a Stickman tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
