I wasn't around in 1983, I first saw SW in the late 90's. I always thought Palpatine could've survived, and when I was told that in the EU he did in fact survive, I thought that was awesome.

I think part of my disinterest with Palpatine being back yet again is that the filmmakers have always seemed to find him far more interesting than I do. He's an important catalyst for the plot, and was necessary as an embodiment of evil to be the foil for what was happening to Vader and his relationship with Luke, but it's not really a well that does much for me on its own. It just feels like that same kind of thing that hamstrung TFA to a degree (retreading similar plot beats). There's not really any sign of Palpatine being a part of the previous two movies, so why go down that path again? They found interesting things to do with the characters they have and their backstories, particularly in TLJ, so I'm hoping they lean into that rather than use the original trilogy as a crutch as opposed to an inspiration.

But it's very hard to get a feel one way or the other from the trailer.

Also Kevin smith just dropped the ball a bit. His trailer review, when Palpatine is looking down on Rey, he goes ‘spider chair spider chair’ to the spidey theme tune.

I think that's CLEARLY a reference to his experience with his failed Superman movie and then Wild Wild West. I'd you've never heard him tell that story, I highly recommend seeking it out.

They have some serious explaining to do on Palpatine.
Or at least a difficult path to selling it and making it satisfying and believable.
Could be just morning cranks but I dunno.

We know he can’t force ghost but we know Sith spirits can inhabit objects.

I haven't read them either. I've been thinking about picking them up after Bloodline. I have skimmed various articles and wiki-entries about it, as well as played a game that references part of it. From what I can gather, there are lots of clues in the new canon (Disney era) about the Emperor returning. In the The Last Jedi novel, the Emperor had a secret base with large war material around the time of ROTJ. After the Battle of Jakku, his most loyal men were instructed to follow the maps from his observatory and jump out into the Unknown Regions. In Aftermath his men are convinced that the he will return, and performs a special ceremony with that in mind. They believe that his body had perished, but that his soul had survived.

Empire’s End, the final book in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy, had a part that might be about Snoke?:

"During his reign, Empire’s End explains, Palpatine ordered the creation of several secrets “observatories” throughout the galaxies. These observatories were equipped with computers that sent signals out into the Unknown Regions – an uncharted, unexplored area of space – in the hopes of creating a hyperspace path.

After the book explains Palpatine’s purpose for the observatories, Gallius Rax, recalls what Palpatine hoped to find out there in the Unknown (from page 379):

Before Palpatine’s demise at the hands of the rebels, the computers finished their calculations, finally finding a way through the unknown. The Emperor was convined that something waited for him out there – some origin of the force, some dark presence formed of malevolent substance. The Emperor called it a signal – conveniently one that only he could hear. Even his greatest enforcer, Vader, seemed oblivious to it…"

Yeah it’s in the thrawn books I think too, that palps senses something out there.
The second one has Anakin and Thrawn went to investigate.

I gave up on the new canon books after that. They all hint and nudge towards stuff so maybe it’ll all tie up together after the film. I really hope so.
There definitely seems to be a huge plan / story strategy and as KK there in that interview it’s confirming there is a huge mapped out story. We just haven’t seen it all yet.

The movie (episode IX) coming up is the biggest thing in the Star Wars universe. But I also think the books, comics and games will be able to open up after its release. Will hopefully see some really solid releases, with lots of answers.
