23 years ago today me & two buddies drove up to Charlotte for my first Pearl Jam show.
I should dig out that boot of it I have somewhere tonight and give it a listen.

I just listened to that show a few nights back. It was better than I remembered it being when I first listened to it.

As I continue through my re-listen of the 2000 bootlegs trying to keep up with the dates as they happen 19 years later. I am in Toronto, there is no other way to say, but this show is a fucking beast.

I remember that being one of my favorite more "under the radar" shows from that tour...

I didn't have this in my iTunes library so I added it. I was also at this show and haven't listened to it since maybe 2012.

From what I remember of the show....

It was a fun night and the setlist was amazing. Going into it I was hoping for IMT, Tremor Christ, and Parting Ways, and all three were played. My then girlfriend, now wife, got into them with the Ten / Singles stuff and has always like Breath. It too was played along with the Mamasan trilogy and a few other gems like In Hiding, MFC, Habit, Present Tense, Off He Goes, and Sonic Reducer. Setllist wise, it's a hard one to top.

Performance and sound aren't as good as the setlist would indicate though. Being there was one thing. The energy was awesome, and it was just fun. Probably my first PJ show where the nostalgia act thing came into play for me. They weren't out to really prove anything either, unlike say 1998/2000 when they're making a strong case for best fucking live band around. It was just a fun, high energy show with a great setlist.

Just listening to the boot however does expose a few of the flaws. I think my biggest one is just the way it all sounds. It's as if everyone in the band, and their instruments all have a head cold. Certain spots I'm hearing Matt play the hell out of the drums but the drums sound like they have those rubber cover things over them. The cymbals are really tinny sounding, and there isn't good distinction between the guitars. It all just kinda blends together. I guess sometime after 2006 (or during) is when Ed started getting over the top with the extra enunciations and warbles. This comes through on a lot of places and just takes me out of the song.

Even songs that are perfectly (or close to) performed have that overall stuffy head with ringing ears sound. All this makes it a fond show to go back and think about, but a challenging bootleg to listen to.

Sydney 2014, just finished the mainset. This is pretty bad so far, as is this whole Australian Leg of the 2014 tour.

What kind of bad? Sloppy playing? Bad vocals? Major mistakes? All of the above?

Yes all of the above:)
"Highlight" is a completely botched version of Insignificance, the last 4 songs of the mainset are just not good. Ed is struggling vocally, even the standards Betterman, Black, RITFW are not good. Throw your arms around me, Kick out the jams - meh. The only good versions are DTE, Getaway, In Hiding, Footsteps but this show never got going. Weird guitar tones sometimes as well (the intro to Corudroy and Porch for example...)
I think they played the last 2103 show in December and didn't practice for this leg. This is how this felt. And on top of that, every show here was "just" a festival.

Listening to New Mexico 2000, I noticed something here that I heard before in the 2nd leg of this tour. For some reason Ed changed the last verse of the girl to " Oh the naked truth, Sleeping Alone". For some reason I thought this was just a fuck up, but for some reason on this leg, he just simply made up a new lyric for the last verse of the song, very strange.

Most likely, I remember reading a few years back that his divorce was finalized the night of one of the Boston Shows. The first leg of the 2000 US tour was a very different band. Ed was real angry still and did not talk really at all through the shows and it was after the Roskilde festival which probably lead to them being more reserved. The band that reappeared for the 2nd leg of the US tour was really the beginnings of what the band would become over the next decade or so.

It wasn't particularly good in person either. Insignificance (even with the fuck up) and Jeremy were the highlights.

Currently listening to San Francisco III 2006. Now that's more like it! So, so good! I don't know if it was the best show ever in person or the best setlist (probably not) but this definitely is one of the best bootlegs ever! They always brought it when they were on the road with Sonic Youth:)
