If this had been explained or happened in the any of the movies, it would make selling it a lot easier to fans not familiar with the off screen canon stuff. In fact, if they showcased that in the OT, the ending to ROTJ would be even better - yeah, the emperor is dead, but is he really dead??? (assuming we saw another sith inhabit an object, but I can't recall ever seeing that).dimejinky99 wrote:They have some serious explaining to do on Palpatine.

Maybe the movie introduces it in such a way as it makes it seem normal and part of the universe.Coach wrote:If this had been explained or happened in the any of the movies, it would make selling it a lot easier to fans not familiar with the off screen canon stuff. Like, in ESB, did anyone have a problem with force ghost Obi-Wan? I think we all just accepted it as part of the movie and how the force works.
maybe this sith thing sounds hokey on paper, but translates better to the screen. I dunno

LOL, I'm trying to be more positive. The music from the trailer is giving me hope for an epic conclusion. That's the inherent hitch in building canon over 40 years.Coach wrote:If this had been explained or happened in the any of the movies, it would make selling it a lot easier to fans not familiar with the off screen canon stuff. Because of context and perspective. Like everything.blueviper wrote:Anders wrote:I love the OT as much as anyone (no disrespect intended to the lovers out there), but it was obvious things would change if they made new movies, even if it was Lucas himself who did it. Out of all the changes they have made, Sidious being back, while significant, doesn't seem like something to complain about. It's typical Star Wars.
I think of all the changes (Han and Leia ending up divorced with a mass murderer for a son, Sidious back. the new republic failing so miserably, Han dying, Leia back to leading the resistance, etc), the changes to Luke are the ones that felt most off for me. And still that would have been acceptable, if that movie was any better.
I get it. I understand stuff would change if George were making 1-3 and 7-9. At the time this was the farthest thing from people's minds. We never thought these other episodes would ever be made.
It just feels they went about it in a weird, unsatisfying way.

For those who are worried this kind of thing (totally valid, btw)... might I humbly suggest instead of looking at it and saying "they should have done 'x'" that instead you look at it as "okay so that happened, why?"Strat wrote:blueviper wrote:LOL, I'm trying to be more positive. I mean, technically Ghost Obi-Wan was set up with "if you strike me down..." and then talking to Luke at the end of ANH, even though he was clearly dead.blueviper wrote:Maybe the movie introduces it in such a way as it makes it seem normal and part of the universe.Coach wrote:If this had been explained or happened in the any of the movies, it would make selling it a lot easier to fans not familiar with the off screen canon stuff. BV might be onto something.
How many of the regular cinema going audience will know there can’t be Sith ghosts?
How about they just break the ‘rule’ and make him a Sith ghost?
If any Sith could find a way it would be Palpatine.
You’d see the majority of the hardcore fans to for that I reckon.
They do something new with the force each film.
Groundwork for it is laid out in ROTS

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
I've never once doubted that the canon COULD change. It seems totally likely, in fact, that some new creator will eventually do a Sith Force Ghost kind of thing. My issue was always that Lucas' logic for why there ARE NOT Sith Ghosts makes total sense. But I don't expect casual fans or even new creators to know about that "rule" or to agree with it.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
I'm talking specifically about the no Sith Force Ghost rule. Which has NEVER been stated in the films or even explicitly in the broader canon. It's George's rule, his idea. And I love it and I hope it never changes. But if it does, technically, it would not violate stated canon. That's not the same as "changing everything." Nor is it lazy on any level.VinylGuy wrote:Oh cmon. Now we could agree with them changing everything?
