Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
From BO'B: "If you like Pearl Jam, you'll love this. And if you haven't listened to Pearl Jam in awhile, I think it's going to bring you in. That's the whole idea."
That's a pretty horrible quote, but looking at the last sentence again, the suggestion seems to be this album might do that, as opposed to the last one. Louder, more aggressive, who knows, but maybe BO'B thought about bringing people back in this time, rather than reaching for a new crowd. Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe.

Pretty sure that was a Mike quote.harmless wrote:From BO'B: "If you like Pearl Jam, you'll love this. And if you haven't listened to Pearl Jam in awhile, I think it's going to bring you in. That's the whole idea."

BoB doesn't know what the album sounds like yet: "You tell me."

This was from a more recent article. But yeah, Mike's was similar.EJ wrote:Pretty sure that was a Mike quote.harmless wrote:From BO'B: "If you like Pearl Jam, you'll love this. And if you haven't listened to Pearl Jam in awhile, I think it's going to bring you in. That's the whole idea."

If bob says its the best song on the record, that probably just means its the cheesiest.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
It really depends on whether he's able to see a song for its own merits, how diverse he can be as a producer. His past career suggests he'll produce to fit a specific project's needs; he'll work to the brief. If that brief is what it sounds like Backspacer was, that's what he'll do. So I'm waiting to see if we find out Lightning Bolt was meant to be something different. I'm not expecting something vastly different, but in the important stuff, a difference would be nice.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
I've gone from worrying about the piano on FD, though, to worrying about his presence across the album. I was forgetting just how much he plays on Backspacer. "Sorry Boom, big fella, you're not needed today. Probably not tomorrow either. How about I just call you if we need you." Sheesh.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
Iirc, pearl jam wanted backspacer to sound like backspacer and so it makes sense to give BoB a greater degree of control if they thought he could produce the results. I am not sure they would surrender control if reaching for a sound that was more in their conventional wheelhouse.

Everything took much longer this time, so a bit more depth is what's implied.

For all that I love that video, I'm glad it's just a throwaway thing rather than a concept PJ Inc. got hold of. I don't want an album full of cartoons this time.

Holy shit I want this album. What do you say we all congregate here tomorrow night while the listening party is on, and.... listen to the silence?
