I think those numbers really need some context to be of any use, and the quick headline is essentially useless and misleading, because it almost paints the picture that farmers were fine until Trump came along.

And then my followup point was only that while trade wars are largely unpopular for the very reasons you've shared, those are all very immediate impacts; and that Trump, for all his tomfuckery, has what many lifelong ag professionals see as a valid tactical approach (I do not necessarily subscribe to this belief): Dig in your heels and upend the markets in hopes of renegotiating trade deals down the line.

I'm sure that many AG pros do feel as you describe. I fundamentally oppose government policies designed to shield certain businesses from competition, though I do admit that there are legitimate concerns about the entire business model of farming and it is extremely sensitive to all sorts of fluctuations, so reasonable arguments can be made to support their side, even if I will likely end up disagreeing in the end.

On the other hand, I'm extremely skeptical of this digging in and renegotiating plan actually working. And that's before we remember that Trump is a staggeringly incompetent buffoon who undercuts himself with breathtaking dexterity.

He's done a miserable job of implementing this tactic -- see my prior post re: a hammer vs. a scalpel -- but I think that the reporting around it has completely missed the fucking point of what seems to be a valid gripe for certain sectors: That trade deals dating back to the 1940s don't favor major U.S. export producers, and it's beyond time to renegotiate.

I agree with the first sentence obviously. And just as obviously I don't agree with the second part. Well, I mean I would renegotiate, but to further liberalize trade and movement of goods and people.

i don't think farmers as a bloc clearly support trump

they are suffering, for a variety of reasons. trump can't fix it and is making it worse in certain ways

in general when a group is suffering, the incumbent pays the price for it

look at the whole rust belt issue
