Yeah, I don't need PJ to be experimental. If done right, Lightning Bolt has elements of some of my favourite songs. I guess I've become a little bit more worried lately about Backspacer production. What if MYM is really the odd one out on the record? Nervous.

just remember that backspacer sounds like backspacer because they wanted an album with that feel. It's not like they set out to write binaural and had it come out sounding like backspacer

How much did they say about the 'new wave' intention before it came out? I guess, with MYM and the (slightly poppy) darkness of the artwork, we're being led to believe that it's something different this time around, even if it has a Backspacer sheen. I mean, the lightness of Backspacer is also down to the actual songs. And it's really hard not to colour the rest of the album with something like The Fixer.

I think most of the songs on backspacer sound appropriate for the feel of that album. One or two exceptions, obviously, and there are choices here and there I don't like.

If I recall there were some hints about backspacer sounding lighter

Yeah, I think so too.

I keep going to the fact that Ten is shiny, and so is Vs. And I love those albums. If you like a clear production, even if not a 'pop' one, BO'B can do the job. It's as much about things like guitar tone and whether the band plays well enough. Ed's vocals in MYM have me excited to see how Ed has experimented with his voice in this one.

Ten is shiny? That's probably the last word I'd use to describe that album.

Yes, it's very shiny. It's loud, and the guitar tones are aggressive. The drum sound is tight and aggressive. But all the instruments are crystal clear and have a sheen all over them. Add to that a bunch of reverb and vocal effects... Yeah, it's shiny. You just don't notice because the performance has so much balls.

I mean, Master / Slave has keyboard / drum machine effects. It really isn't a live-sounding album. In fact, BO'B's redux made it more so.

In one hour, Brendan O'Brien is holding a listening party for Lightning Bolt in Berlin. We should hear little things about the tracks shortly afterwards.

I'm going into this with Ten blaring in my ears. I am such a cheeseball but Ten is so fucking brilliant.

Irony of ironies: I never noticed before how much closed hi-hat / ride cymbal that Dave Krusen uses.

The drum tone on Ten is so much my thing, and Krusen thrashes around so much more than Matt, it doesn't bother me at all. He might use the ride as a main time-keeper, but there are tons of other cymbals punctuating the hits and accents at the same time.

And where it counts, the hi-hat's open, like on the intro of Why Go.
