yes I believe the music world shifted from one where money is made off albums to one where money is made off touring. which may also explain in part why the band (Ed) seems to have little motive to release a new album vs. continuing to tour (PRAMG)tragabigzanda wrote:My knee-jerk reaction is that a digital and CD release are basically lost leaders to sell tickets to shows, and hopefully get a couple of singles placed in film or television. this, pretty much.Chris_H_2 wrote:idiot fans literally spend hundreds of dollars on pearl jam stickers and trading cards. you don't think that the gullible jamily wouldn't spend a 1000x that for a hastily thrown together shitty album that the band puts out on its own (or exclusively through target)?theplatypus wrote:How much money is there in releasing albums nowadays?dprival78 wrote:for as much as these guys (eddie) love stackin' those dollas.. how have they not at least put out another b-side album during this dry period?
it's an obvious win-win for everyone, no? band makes money, we get music - and, since it's music that would have been written years ago, it's probably pretty good.
Serious question, not snark. Would a release like this represent a significant cash injection for the band? Or do all the associated costs make it negligible?
I imagine this would be a more straightforward question to answer if it was an album of newly recorded material
they could keep it cheap on their end.. release it digitally at first, then follow up by offering a "super terrific happy deluxe" version on cd/vinyl. the jamily-types would eat it up.
it might not be insane money, but it would be a decent payday i would imagine. and, it would also send a signal to the world saying "hey, remember us? yea, we're still a band, and keep that in mind for when we tour again".
music for us, money and a bump in relevance for them.

agreed. and considering they can practically sell out shows without the support of a new album, what's the value in spending money in the studio and pressing albums other than artistic expression for them at this point.96583UP wrote:yes I believe the music world shifted from one where money is made off albums to one where money is made off touring. which may also explain in part why the band (Ed) seems to have little motive to release a new album vs. continuing to tour (PRAMG)tragabigzanda wrote:My knee-jerk reaction is that a digital and CD release are basically lost leaders to sell tickets to shows, and hopefully get a couple of singles placed in film or television. Stone owns the studio and no producer is present. There is legit $0 cost this time.bodysnatcher wrote:agreed. and considering they can practically sell out shows without the support of a new album, what's the value in spending money in the studio and pressing albums other than artistic expression for them at this point.96583UP wrote:yes I believe the music world shifted from one where money is made off albums to one where money is made off touring. which may also explain in part why the band (Ed) seems to have little motive to release a new album vs. continuing to tour (PRAMG)tragabigzanda wrote:My knee-jerk reaction is that a digital and CD release are basically lost leaders to sell tickets to shows, and hopefully get a couple of singles placed in film or television. But what do you think of the notion that money in the music industry these days is to be made by touring, merchandising, and tv/movie placement?tragabigzanda wrote:My knee-jerk reaction is that a digital and CD release are basically lost leaders to sell tickets to shows, and hopefully get a couple of singles placed in film or television. Do I need to explain the joke?tragabigzanda wrote:I subscribe to the Steve Albini outlook: the idea that record companies should make money hand over fist for physical media is a very recent and short-lived concept, really just prominent from like the 1950s to 1999. Prior to that they sold sheet music, and prior to that it was all made through live performances. We’re just conditioned to it because we grew up with it.Bammer wrote:But what do you think of the notion that money in the music industry these days is to be made by touring, merchandising, and tv/movie placement?tragabigzanda wrote:My knee-jerk reaction is that a digital and CD release are basically lost leaders to sell tickets to shows, and hopefully get a couple of singles placed in film or television. Jeff and Stone made albums pretty much by themselves. And both Moonlander and Heaven-Hell sound way better than Avocado, Backspacer or LB.

I would be stunned if they had enough worthwhile material for a "Lost Dogs 2," and it's probably to their credit that they haven't tried to release one. I'd suspect things like "Cold Confession" and "Let it Ride" are the exception.

Of the Earth, Ole. There's 4 right there with the two you mentioned. I'm sure they could drum up 12 more songs somewhere in their archives.Kevin Davis wrote:I would be stunned if they had enough worthwhile material for a "Lost Dogs 2," and it's probably to their credit that they haven't tried to release one. Lost Dogs came out before Riot Act, though. So there has to be stuff laying around from RA and ST as well, right?bodysnatcher wrote:Not sure who in their right mind would want to hear a Lightning Bolt b-side
