Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
There's should be more than enough for another Lost Dogs. Even with what we know exists.Kevin Davis wrote:I'm sure they could put out something -- there are still a few tracks from 1991-2003 that could use a good home ("Sunburn," "Happy When I'm Crying," etc.), and I wouldn't discount a pleasant surprise or two, but I think a new rarities-type release would be exactly what you say: a lot of "drumming up." Beyond the few tracks that missed the original release, I can't help but think the 1991-2003 era is pretty much bled dry, and I can't imagine their log of "excess" material from the last fifteen years doesn't relatively mirror, in quality and quantity, their regular album output from the last fifteen years.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Of the Earth, Ole. There's 4 right there with the two you mentioned. I'm sure they could drum up 12 more songs somewhere in their archives.Kevin Davis wrote:I would be stunned if they had enough worthwhile material for a "Lost Dogs 2," and it's probably to their credit that they haven't tried to release one. I'd suspect things like "Cold Confession" and "Let it Ride" are the exception.
I'd love to be wrong, of course.

Re: 11th album rumors and speculation
Okay, I guess what I'm meaning to say is, I'd be surprised if there was much of interest left that we haven't heard. Yes, if they wanted to release a "Lost Dogs 2" just so they could have another way of repackaging "State of Love and Trust," "Breath," "Man of the Hour," etc., then they could get something out pretty easily. And yes, there is a lot of substandard crap like "Santa God" and "Turning Mist" and "Chinese" that they could include to pad out a release like this. Going back to my initial post, I think it is to their credit that they haven't done either of these things just for the sake of putting a product on the market.
The original "Lost Dogs," for all its annoying overdubs, retakes, and occasionally curious omissions, really cleared a pretty high bar as far as rarities albums go. It unearthed a number of high quality, finished "new" songs (the Binaural outtakes, "All Night," etc.), gave widespread release to things only previously available in limited format (the holiday singles), and put a lot of their other best-known B-sides in one place. And it told a story. I wish the recordings were all unedited originals, but in terms of the material it collects, in my opinion it's every bit the equal of the studio albums of the 1991-2003 era (and superior to the studio albums of the subsequent era) and a lovely way of tying a ribbon on their years with Epic.
A new career-spanning "Lost Dogs 2," assuming they could work out logistics of a release that contains both Epic and post-Epic material, would comprise (a) leftover material from 1991-2003 that didn't make the cut for a thirty-track release fifteen years ago, and (b) whatever is still in the can from 2004-2019, generally unproductive years that barely produced any actual released material, let alone an abundance of quality stray tracks. A lot of the songs listed previously are songs I really like ("Leatherman," "Happy When I'm Crying," "Angel," "Sunburn"), but I'm not surprised that Sony -- who to my knowledge still owns this material -- hasn't anchored a release around them in an era where album sales are bottoming out.
Not to say there isn't a right way to get some of that stuff out (a Complete Holiday Singles seems logical and inevitable, probably in Spotify playlist format), and again, I'd love to be wrong -- how awesome would it be if, like, eight more new, finished songs from the Irons years suddenly materialized? -- but I don't envision Sony sinking any of their increasingly dwindling resources into a Pearl Jam barrel-scrape release.

I love the idea of putting no less than four songs from your greatest hits record on a collection of rarities.
I honestly always assumed they only did this with Yellow Ledbetter out of pure forgetfulness.

The Lost Dogs part 2 I listed above is about as good as Lost Dogs part 1, although Sad, Fatal, All Night and one or two others, were top tier Pearl Jam.Kevin Davis wrote:Okay, I guess what I'm meaning to say is, I'd be surprised if there was much of interest left that we haven't heard. Non album songs, makes sense to me. Shouldn’t need a greatest hits to have all the songs on albums.McParadigm wrote:I love the idea of putting no less than four songs from your greatest hits record on a collection of rarities.

You guys are forgetting "Betterman (Lives)"
The story of the better man after his wife leaves him, he becomes gravely depressed, decides to seek counseling for his current state and his past regrets, gets a new job that he's happy with, finally starts reading more, and is really turning his life around

there has to be a studio version of 'falling down' kicking around somewhere
(and speaking of that, why haven't they played it live yet? we've gotten bugs, sweet lew, out of my mind.. let's go.)

it's an obvious win-win for everyone, no? band makes money, we get music - and, since it's music that would have been written years ago, it's probably pretty good.
Serious question, not snark. Would a release like this represent a significant cash injection for the band?
