Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
Just finished it.
Thoughts:
- Its a movie that looks gorgeous in some scenes and pretty digital and bland in others. But damn, when it looks good its just stunning.
- Poor Finn. His character gets reduce to nothing. He is almost redeemed when he is about to kill himself but no. Poor guy.
- Poe is so fucking stupid it hurts. Another one that changed so much from TFA to this one. All his choices here are awful and pretty much all he does is run from one spot to another yelling stuff. And fuck i hate how he yells at 3PO. You show respect motherfucker. Nobody cares about you.
- How cool is Leia here? The force flight didnt bother me this time...and Carrie is actually..ok.
- I think Rey being a clone of the emperor works so goddamn good with her force view. It also could tell us why she has such a drawn to the dark side.
- Also, im pretty sure whatever Kylo saw about her parents was bullshit Snoke gave him.
- Knowing the emperor is back, it doesnt bother me Snoke is gone.
- Hux is awful.
- The comedy is awful. But the worst part is the first scene with Hux and Poe. The comedic timing is anywhere to be seen.
- Everything on Canto Bight is such a waste of time. This movie would be sooo much better without it. That includes Del Toro. He is awful.
- Everything with Luke is fuuuuucking good. His scene with Kylo is memorable. Hamill is so fucking good. What a waste he is gone at the end. Stupid choice too.
- Kylo Ren is so good. But there is no way he can redeem himself. He finishes this movie with so much anger, its just not possible.
- Rey is ok. I wasnt really interested in her on this view. She is just..there. Hopefully a lot happens to her in the next one.
I think the best scenes on this one are fucking stellar but the low points are so many, its just a mess. Its too long, has a lot of useless plot points and its kind of a drag. Its still a good sequel to a maybe inferior movie, but much more enjoyable.
I really hope Rise Of Skywalker can be more direct and interesting.

I agree with VG on most points as well except:
- I lover everything about the Luke storyline. His arc is still not over either.
- I didn't love Poe in this, but I think it was within his character.
- The humor seemed like a mixture of Marvel and the SW prequels, but I didn't mind it as much. Wish it was goofier?

I mostly agree with Carrie being awful, but she is still miles better in this one than in TFA. Thats why i fear her scenes in the new will be awful.tragabigzanda wrote:I agree with nearly everything there, VG, except for:
1. I think Carrie is awful in the new movies
2. I love what they did with Luke here
Otherwise we hold the exact same opinions on this one
In TLJ she has at least some good moments. I think Rian saw TLJ and knew she couldnt act anymore. So he gaves us moments, images...the scene with her watching inside the new rebel base, the moment with Luke, Her watching and feeling Kylo..she barely talks in all of those. Good choice by Rian.

Good point and i hope thats the case with Luke's arc not being over. I sincerely hope his role in the new movie is important and significant.Monkey_Driven wrote:I agree with VG on most points as well except:

The humor was always important in SW but here, its idiotic and the timing is just awful. Really, its embarrassing.

Oh my God, I forgot about the Hux/Poe scene in the beginning. That might be the worst scene in any SW movie.

Easy to miss that he was stalling for time fo his booster to power up.
But have to admit it was my first ‘oh no’ in the cinema in my first viewing.
*i also pretty much shouted ‘what??’ out loud when Luke chucked the saber. We’d all so much invested in that moment and build up to it and how it was gonna go down.
I love everything else about Luke and where he was taken in the story. It makes sense.
But the saber chuck I don’t think I’ll ever be at peace with. They could have done it thousands of other ways. Just hand it back and walk off and say nothing.
Ugh

The thing that didn't work for me is that the exchange seemed entirely unnecessary for the larger narrative. His overconfidence and bravado were demonstrated in how brazenly he approached and escaped the destroyer, while ignoring how the attack depleted the fleet. There were many other ways he could have stalled.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Oh my God, I forgot about the Hux/Poe scene in the beginning. That might be the worst scene in any SW movie.

oh yeah. It was so poorly filmed. Huge fuck you to how the previous movie finished too. It should have been different for sure.dimejinky99 wrote:Easy to miss that he was stalling for time fo his booster to power up.

Wasn’t poorly filmed. Just a bad decision.
