What the fuck happened to him. He’s an embarrassment. A complete 180 in every way with zero shame.

I mean, Pearl Jam completed their creative journey, and their emotional driver healed. Now they’re stuck with an apparatus that needs their financial support, and an audience that is happiest when they fake still being on that old, familiar journey.

The entire 2000-09 catalog is them trying to find a way to go forward and be something just a little different...that is, different enough to give them room to explore, but also something that won’t upset the dwindling fanbase they can no longer afford to lose. Binaural’s space folk, Riot Act’s clean-cut middle age meditation, ST’s professional craftsmanship, Backspacer’s survivor celebration....it’s all a search for how to be Pearl Jam now that the wounds are healed. I could be new. You underestimate me.

I would argue that some/most/all of those were successful in their way, but in each case the band pretty clearly felt that the audience didn’t respond the way they’d hoped it would. Maybe they’ll try again on the new record, but it seems likely to be another lightning bolt...a record less interested in adding new things than in making sure each facet of their past, each sound or style, is in some way represented. A record that says “I don’t know what you want, but hopefully it’s somewhere in here.” A record inspired by the need to release a record.

I would also point out that the arc of the 2000-09 records is from most risky (Binaural) to most eager to please. You can almost see the confidence in their artistic impulse seep out in real time. And when even that doesn’t work, the attempts just end.

well put. That's also why I take BS over LB any day. Eventhough LB has some better songs. BS as a record, as a statement is much better. It's also a better addition to their catalogue, LB is a bit of everything making it a bit of nothing. If BS is an exclamation mark than LB is a question mark. A question mark about where the fuck to go next and a question mark for we don't know anymore.... And it sure takes them long to answer their question.....

Maybe this has been posted already, but does anyone know what this is? I thought it may be a cover or a Glen song, but it doesn't seem that way.
Yesterday I somewhat randomly grabbed the Hamilton 2011 bootleg off the shelf to listen to during our holiday travels. I haven't listened to much PJ at all over the last few years, and I really enjoyed it -- it wasn't quite a "just like hearing all these songs again for the first time!"-type experience, but I was definitely less attuned to all the things about modern-ish PJ -- both the performances and the songs -- that are amplified by unreasonable over-immersion in Pearl Jam World. "Severed Hand," "The Fixer," "Ole" -- they all sounded great. Eddie a little wobbly on "Corduroy" and "Hail Hail?" Yeah, maybe. But I've heard and enjoyed worse.

Unfortunately that same grace did not extend to this new song. He's really taken this acoustic folkie thing to a place I don't relate to; at this point he feels closer to Jimmy Buffett than he does to Neil Young or Bruce Springsteen.
I feel you here. When I listen to PJ (increasingly rarely) its 2010 or later. The performances are inferior, but that’s where it is now and there isn’t a need to be trapped in the past... it only makes the future less fulfilling
It’s very James Taylor or Jackson Browne

I think the Ghostbusters bit is beyond stupid and literally made me cringe (which I'm not sure an Eddie song has ever literally done before). But I like everything else about the song. It's not great. It's not a game changer. It's not anything new. But it's decent and singable and I like the lane it occupies. Plus, it's always fun to watch Ed perform. He's goofy and dramatic but it's entertaining and can be infectious.

He’s also singing in a range that suits his current abilities. It comes out so naturally and sounds beautiful.
