I think the cat wanted you to finish the bird off. He probably thinks you're incompetent because he never sees you kill anything.

That's why it's unconditional though. You could abuse them regularly, and they'd still wag tails and purr when you fed them. Their needs are so simple.

Unconditional means without condition. Meeting their needs, however simple, is still a condition on their love.

Also, I disagree that an abused animal will continue to show love and affection toward an abusive owner because they get fed by the same person.
