I think it's more likely that the fat guy who asked the question was a GOP plant. Bidens answer wasn't that great, people are just responding to it because he didn't seem like a corpse for once.

Re: Election 2020
He came out looking better. He looked strong, tough, like Trump but not a buffoon. He looks like he could easily beat Trump in a fight now. It's good for his image.verb_to_trust wrote:I think it's more likely that the fat guy who asked the question was a GOP plant. Re: Election 2020
This is great stuff, thanks for posting. I’m not seeing how Pete’s platform doesn’t address these issues in a measured, thoughtful way that’s far more likely to build consensus than, for example, forcing Medicare for All on people who dont want it for themselves but want the option available for Americans who need it.McParadigm wrote:White, young 2018 voters listed their top motivating issues as undoing Trump administration immigration policies, protecting Roe v. Wade, overturning tax breaks for the rich, and gun control.
Young people of color listed racism, immigration and income inequality.
Women who voted in 2018 listed expanding healthcare as their top issue. Second was opposition to current immigration policies, and third was expanding gun control laws.
Non-White voters 35+ listed affordable health care, college affordability, and creating more jobs with benefits.
There are some themes.

You’re right verb. I should get behind an extremist candidate who will ensure four more years of nothing getting done.

Obama wasn't able to get a public option, what makes you think Pete will?

You don't think there's a better chance of success for a public option than the elimination of health insurance?

In 2009, 62% of polled voters wanted a public option. In 2019, that number is 65%.
The only demographics that have ever mattered on this subject are the demographics of the senate.

Well it depends what voters want to get behind and whether or not the eventual candidate will be able to create a wave of like-minded candidates to move the needle on the Senate.

Re: Election 2020
I don’t know how you imagine that plays out. The demographics of support for a public option are pretty consistent today with what they were in 2009. The cost of what those demographics are was such that Democrats couldn’t pass it when they had 60 senate seats. No Republican felt pressured to vote yes. Any Democrat in a remotely red district saw it as political suicide.
In the aftermath of a bitter 2020 presidential election loss, the Republican base is only going to get more vocal about wanting people in office to oppose literally anything Democrats do. They unequivocally will not believe that it was a legitimate electoral victory, and will adopt the language of a hostile takeover. That is just factually going to happen.
Democrats, meanwhile, responded to their own historic victory in 2018...won with some of the most liberal messaging they’ve ever used...by retreating from that messaging, and panicking about whether they’d lost touch with voters.
I think it can be achieved, but it will require less Buttigieging and more old school Nancy Pelosi-style senate sheep counting.

So where does an Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders fit into that scenario? Who among the current crop of candidates for president moves things in that direction?

They are both fantastic rallying cry candidates on the subject, and support for systemic healthcare access change rose among both democratic and independent voters early in the campaign when they were doing exactly that. Neither is especially good at recognizing the limits of that momentum, and tend to overstep in their ambitions.meatwad wrote:So where does an Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders fit into that scenario? If Pete could learn to talk about these things in a way that was more about projecting hope and passion, and about rallying and energizing people towards a better tomorrow, or if Warren and Sanders could just admit “I personally want Medicare for all, but realistically here’s what our marker for success should be right now,” then any one of them could have a better chance at a bigger achievement than any has with the approaches they’re taking now.
Joe Biden is a walking billboard for elder care, so I guess he helps in that way.

Re: Election 2020
I completely agree. I don’t think Pete is doing everything right and hope I never came across that way. I was behind Bernie in 2016 because I felt that there was an opportunity to move things to the left after 8 years of Obama. The 2016 election changed a lot of that, and I know you firmly believe that Trump was an anomaly and that we’ll course-correct, especially looking at the elections we’ve had since. I hope that’s the case, but I can’t deny that I feel a more moderate candidate would be the better choice against Trump. That could certainly change between now and the election.McParadigm wrote:They are both fantastic rallying cry candidates on the subject, and support for systemic healthcare access change rose among both democratic and independent voters early in the campaign when they were doing exactly that. Re: Election 2020
Biden is dunzo
Mayor Pete attempting to swipe his base
even in canada there is also the ability to use private health providers on top of the public option
but what i really want to know is
who are the college educated white women voting for this time?????
i thinnnnk that’s who put trump in office last time (coupled with low black turnout)
if mayor pete, who blacks dislike apparently, can win the college educated white woman vote - then he’s all gravy, right???????
