I will be the first one to download the album when it leaks and I will tell you.harmless wrote:Wait: are you in the no leak club or not? If so, maybe you can tell me whether you think they achieved what we were talking about to do with concept.harmless wrote:Yeah, I hope so. Although I don't think I care to hear BO'B's answer about concepts. He says he doesn't begin with concepts at all; apparently the only fixed concept in his mind is cheese.Mike wrote:harmless wrote:Well, that's art, isn't it? It's possible that PJ didn't have much of an intention at all. If it's a happy accident, I'll still take it. This time, we have a stated intention from Ed about 'bad shit in the world' plus really trippy artwork not subtly alluding to religious end-times / apocalypse. I wanted Backspacer to be this concept record, but so much of it didn't match up and I was stretching too far. If I'm not going to break my back, I don't mind a little grasping with the arm. What if this is the party / slow dance album at the suicide cult's last social disco?Mike wrote:Even if that wasn't Pearl Jam's intention I'm just gonna pretend it was.harmless wrote:Exactly. Like an Asian horror / sci-fi film ending in a cheesy pop song. If the rest of the album has enough eclectic experimentation, that could really work.Mike wrote:Ending the album with that happy cheesy love keyboard would be kind of funny after an album full of songs about all the shit thats going wrong in this world.harmless wrote:Were they echoey? I can't remember. I think echoey vocals was only mentioned on FD, right? To be honest, if the rest of the album does what I'm thinking it's supposed to, maybe FD can ramp up the cheese to 11 and it'll work.![]()
I wish the people at the listening party would have asked more about the songs instead of stuff like touring for Mirror Ball and his birthday. Maybe someone in Amsterdam will do that.

Nothing really new there that would be worth translating.SpectorHD wrote:Some people of the german forum are at the Ramones Museum. As soon as they write a review, I will translate it and post it here.
But: According to BOB Sleeping by Myself has already been recorded for Backspacer and has then found its way onto Uke Songs.

The implication being, I think, that it was a PJ song before a uke song.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
This thread has become like an ungrad sociology project where we come up with some ridiculous theory (eclectic concept album with minimalist art!) and try to mold our observations to fit it, instead of the other way around. Are we really gonna judge a record we haven't heard yet by whether or not a bunch of Germans had a gas while listening or whether they needed a shower afterwards? Maybe the room really was to noisy for them to even concentrate on it! We should not put the album on trial until we hear for it ourselves and not just blindly follow the words of others.

Yeah, you're probably right but it's just kind of fun to speculate.broken iris wrote:This thread has become like an ungrad sociology project where we come up with some ridiculous theory (eclectic concept album with minimalist art!) and try to mold our observations to fit it, instead of the other way around. This post makes no sense. You're acting as if we're all being negative. We're not. You can't stop mindless speculation from happening; we're just talking about possible scenarios based on song descriptions, nothing more. I don't know what else we could be doing other than to stop talking and close the forum for the next month.broken iris wrote:This thread has become like an ungrad sociology project where we come up with some ridiculous theory (eclectic concept album with minimalist art!) and try to mold our observations to fit it, instead of the other way around. Also, I'm not sure what 'a bunch of Germans' has to do with anything.

Agree. All I see is a lot of speculation about something that should not matter that much in our lives as it does.harmless wrote:This post makes no sense. It just seemed to be implying that their opinions are somehow less important or less accurate because they don't speak English.Lounge Lizard wrote:They've paid their dues! Leave the Germans alone!!!harmless wrote:Also, I'm not sure what 'a bunch of Germans' has to do with anything.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
I haven't written this album in my head. I am going to go in as open-minded as I can. But to pretend that they haven't set up certain expectations -- with the first few songs, the artwork, etc. -- and that we can listen to the album in a total vacuum devoid of context is silly.

harmless wrote:Why has only one reviewer (or two) mentioned the 'overproduction'? I guess that someone who loved Backspacer wouldn't really be listening for that. But I'm still curious about what that means. 'Even more than Backspacer.'
I don't know what overproduction means? Slick and glossy? Overdubs and vocal harmonies. MYM has that in a few places and it sounds great. Songs like BRY and and All Night are overproduced to hell. Some extra layered guitars? That would take care of the thinness in Backspacer that many people didn't like. Or is it just lots and lots of keytar?
