I thought the album was called undertown for a long time
Sometimes I wanna drive around and find you
And act like it's a random thing
And act like it's a random thing

Re: TOOL
In real time, it’s quite loud and dark. But I can see where this entire genre exploded around it that was never quite my cup of tea. I give it a lot of points for each of the band members really shining without noodling. This album is both a product of its time and transcends it if that makes sense. So far Intolerance, Prison Sex, and Crawl Away jump out as highlights to me, but there’s a lot of sameness going on here where one songs sort of bleeds into the next. There’s a careful balance between every song sounding the same and carrying a musical thread through an album and they are towing (or undertowing mwahaha) that line nicely. Up to 4* now.

I actually thought it finished pretty strong with 4* and Flood. Disgustipated is a nice little sound experiment that goes on for quite a while. Probably not going to make any playlists though - unless the playlist is just that song and I wanted the soundscape of camping while fearing the spoken word.

Okay, so I am trying, but this is the first journey I may have to abandon. There’s no question they are a very good band, and there’s all the talent in the world. But I just don’t like it. I have no rational explanation for why, but even as I am listening I end up finding I don’t want to. For whatever reason I can discern, it’s just not my cup of tea (I say this as I am 1/4 or so of the way through Ænima). And it’s silly because I can hear some connection to a band like Soundgarden that I love, but this just isn’t doing it for me. Sorry folks.

Re: TOOL
I suggest Sublime as your next listening journey. Another 90's band who it seems will always appeal to America's youth.

Re: TOOL
Not the worst idea for sure since that is another band whom I basically know the greatest hits but never delved too deeply into their albums. Same with the Beastie Boys actually. I am currently listening through but not reporting on Faces. I still can’t understand how they sound good despite the fact that I abhor Rod Stewart’s solo work.rick malone wrote:I suggest Sublime as your next listening journey.
