I totally get that. For me, they just hit that sweet spot of being interesting and still melodically pleasing. Not that these qualities are necessarily opposites.stip wrote:i wasn't a big fan of matt's writing until backspacer, but I think he writes interesting songs that just don't often play to what I see as the band's strengths.Mike wrote:Matt's songwriting gets the band out of their comfort zone in the best way possible. Evacuation, In The Moonlight and Cropduster are just wonderful pieces of music. Eddie always comes up with really interesting vocal melodies in Matts songs.

But clearly the 'majority' opinion isn't always right, by your own admission, so it's not evidence for anything. It's a separate argument that doesn't suit you because you can't squirm out of the contradiction.IlluminEddie wrote:That's a separate argument.harmless wrote:You think Matt's drumming has ruined PJ. That's a pretty massive divergence from 'most PJ fans'.
We were discussing his songwriting. I believe it was you who claimed he was the best in the band. I said he's the worst. PJ fans as whole would most likely agree with me.

I think it would depend on how one would define a PJ fan.stip wrote:i think at this point if you're still a fan you probably do.digster wrote:The vast majority of PJ fans don't give a crap about anything written after 1994, if that.

Basically, I think my point is that trying to insert "this is what all PJ fans think" into your argument is pretty useless.

Wow, this is news to me. Because on the very first day of my 5-year-old's drum lessons, he learned whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes. And his teacher, who drummed for Buddy Guy for 20 years, knows a thing or two about drumming.IlluminEddie wrote:Yes, drummers learn music in a different way - via beats. They aren't note or melody inclined.

Interesting reveal from the Q+A - the band were rarely in the studio at the same time, often communicating via Skype. Stone Gossard and Eddie Vedder have not actually being in the same room (bar shows) since 1998.
