Democratic twitter is literally just a series of “this is person x’s best performance,” with each candidate standing in for person x in more or less equal measure.

they definitely either sent Biden to the Bahamas or painted him with color to make him look less pasty and near-death tonight

and they definitely told him when answering any questions to come out the gate with energy and he did

he still seems to be keeping an edge in the polls

we counted him out, but he wasn't done

and the old people seem to want him

and they are not dead yet

now we just need to get the other extras off the stage

and get Bloomy out there

I watched the debate last night. Biden was mostly on his game, and sounded less like he was appalled to be there, but he wasn’t someone that stuck out to me.

Buttigieg will probably be haunted by the wine cave - it’s just those optics he won’t be able to shake. I will imagine him schmoozing in a tuxedo ordering $900 wine from a cave forever. This is especially problematic because he is still running on the cult of his personality and not any issue or cause to overrun that visual.

Yang I thought had a great debate because he was authentically amusing (other candidates like Klobuchar are having a hard time with that), and his answers were thoughtful and not overly rehearsed.

Tom Steyer I think revealed a lot of problems for himself. His answer on impeachment is exactly the quandary Democrats find themselves in selling impeachment. He acted like he was ahead of the curve calling for impeachment but to me it sounded like he’s the force behind the crying wolf that makes the public not engaged with the severity of the abuse of power on Ukraine. I mean, yes I think Trump should have faced impeachment over the Mueller Report, or at the least had a full congressional investigation surrounding the most damning aspects of it. Yes, I think he should have been censured for intermixing his personal finances with the office of the presidency. But Steyer saying he’s been for this all along smells of him supporting impeachment because he doesn’t agree with the president or because the president is generally a bad person and inept. Those aren’t reasons for impeachment. Abuse of power is. Republicans are effectively lumping it all together to confuse the difference, and it’s the Steyer Democrats that made that position easy to argue.

Bernie - one trick pony at this debate. No nuance, just rich people bad.

Klobuchar I think was strong again and came off less conservative and more steeped in policy. She just needs to stop pretending she’s folksy because it looks really inauthentic. When she is instead talking about work, she seems tough but relatable.

The bar shouldn’t be that high given the state of the office at the moment. If the world were a decent place, we’d collectively be capable of understanding that even with 3 years experience in the office, each of these people is more qualified to hold the position, in terms of temperament and in terms of competence, than the person currently holding the office. 3 years in and this president doesn’t seem any more educated on the issues, any more insightful about his decision making. It still seems he wakes up, watches news entertainment, and reacts to it.

Also, he has never for a moment seemed to think about what would be good for the country, only how he can sell his own reality for re-election. This is because he seems to believe he owns this country, so what is good for him is good for the nation.

It shouldn’t take much in a sane world to defeat that at the ballot box, and most of the people on that stage should be capable of that. The reality is that with no holds barred, it will be a bloody battle to Election Day no matter who gets that nomination.

I don’t care for Buttigieg. I don’t like his inexperience, I don’t like that he adopts conservative talking points for Democratic proposals he disagrees with, and I don’t like that the proposals he is most likely to single out are ones that are opposed by his bundlers and their associates. I think he’s much closer to being politically agnostic than he is to being a believer in actual Democratic principles/policies.

I’ll probably never forgive Yang for opposing impeachment, and floating the idea of pardoning Trump.

Everyone else I’d be comfortable supporting. They each have positives. I still worry that Biden is ill equipped for the realities of the modern political landscape, and will be too quick to see signs of reform in a Republican Party that will be looking for a way to outwardly brand itself as reformed while internally maintaining key loyalties that are incompatible with real reform. President Biden would definitely be too swift to put the White House’s vote of confidence on such an effort in newspaper headlines.

as it relates to the election, i do think impeachment is a turn-off issue for many voters. not because they like trump or think he doesn’t break rules - but because it is so exhausting and does not help them get any closer to their goals: healthcare, better jobs, cheaper education, childcare, infrastructure.

the Dems should keep twisting the knife in Congress as long as they can to get trump to squeal and keep him off his game. but they should use caution dwelling on it in the election sphere bc I don’t think it’s an issue that boosts voter turnout - which is what they need.

but curious to know what the polls say about such things

pfft why focus on that when we can obsess over the gender/race/age/wealth of the Dem candidate as the primary determinant of victory
