Yea this might be my biggest bother and really the only retread from last Jedi. Her and Finns relationship was kind of an important aspect of the story. She was a hero in the last one and this one they were mostly strangers. Weak abrams. Weak.
I wasn't too bothered with how Rose was used in the movie. But I would have liked one more scene or interaction between Rose and Finn that gave more information about where they're at now regarding each other.

There's enough there to piece something together that makes sense. But just a bit more, one little moment, would have gone a long way toward smoothing this over. As it stands I totally get why people have issues with it.
There is no regarding each other. He's still got a boner for RRREEEEEEEEEYYYYY!! He even almost told her so.

Right. I think this is strongly implied and supported. One more quick moment to catch us up on the past year, just something to make it explicit (not Rey; that's pretty fucking explicit).

Chewie was already given a medal and gave it away. In the comics.

But!!!

Maz was giving him hans medal. From Leais belongings.

There ye go
Yeah. Other than it being Han's it was unneeded. Basically, JJ "making something right" that didn't need fixing.

I didn’t hate it. It was just pointless. And obvious.

People are saying zeb is definitely in this. You see the ghost landing on the planet and as maz hands chewie the medal he’s in the background.

I’d say we’re not done here. This feels like a door is still wide open for everything from films down through all media

There will absolutely be a story somewhere down the line, way in the future (maybe even after Rey's dead) about going to retrieve those sabers from the sand.

Definitely possible. But Daisy seems pretty done with Star Wars right now. Of course that can change. But I wouldn't be surprised if she's done for good.

Second watchers tell me if I'm right about this. Finn, Poe, and Cheque are escaping. When they're turning the first corner, Poe shoots a Stormtrooper. Then, Finn shoots, and misses on his first shot. I thought that was a "Finn used to be a Stormtrooper" gag.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I came out of it feeling really bad for Chewbacca. Absolutely none of his old family or friends are still alive. Outside of Lando and Rey, who I guess maybe he has a bond with thru the ones she built with Han and Leia, he has absolutely no one left. Oh, but he finally got a medal. Big deal. Like that’s supposed to make up for the fact he’s lost everyone in the last couple of years. Or however much time takes place thru this trilogy.
Its also funny to see C3PO pretend that all these abusive strangers are his friends.
Spoiler: show
Was that supposed to be a tearjerk moment when he deleted his memory? They even deflate the scene further by spoiling the fact that R2 can just give him his memory back in the same scene.
terrible.
Spoiler: show
I have to agree on the memory issue with threepio. Surely it would have been simple for them to do a backup before retrieving the data and wiping his memory. Instead, they don't even discuss it and let a droid do it on its own accord. What a bunch of assholes.

I hope thats the case. Also, it could be a hint on ¨Finn is a useless character¨ too.

Overall, I think maybe the critical drubbing helped, because I went in expecting the worst. It's definitely got some problems, and I can say pretty quickly I'd consider it the worst of the new trilogy, but it wasn't at all akin to the low points of something like Attack of the Clones, as was being suggested. The acting is great (this whole trilogy was lucky to find/get Ridley and Driver), and some of the set pieces were stunning.
Spoiler: show
The big critique I have is pretty much the decision to bring back Palpatine, and the way that storyline unfolds, just isn't a good move IMO. While there are some great aspects to it, it feels unnecessary, and his reappearance (as well as his relationship to Rey) is such a key part of the movie that I think the fact that it doesn't really work for me handcuffs the film somewhat. Like most have been saying, I'd need to see it again because I feel like a lot was missed.

I don't think any of the callback stuff was too egregious, other than things like Han saying "I know." It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's such an effective scene and that kind of underlining the callback just makes me hyperaware of the writer with that intent. That being said, there's a fine line between an ineffective callback and mirroring a past moment.
