Not usually my kinda thing. But I needed a change of pace and this guy is super nice. I hope he wrote a good Crime Thriller. Folks who like such things seem to praise this one highly.

I must've really fooled 'em! My university is going to let me teach an Honors English course this year--only 15 students, and all of them need to have a minimum 3.4 GPA to register. The syllabus is based off a graduate course I took a few years ago, with a couple of books added by me (theme: 1990s literature, ideas of nation, labor, and race). Reading list is:
Octavia Butler - "Parable of the Sower"
Ana Castillo - "The Guardians"
Ed Park - "Personal Days"
Colson Whitehead - "The Intuitionist"
Karen Tei Yamashita - "Tropic Of Orange"
Sapphire - "Push"
Jeffrey Eugenides - "Middlesex"
Chuck Palahniuk - "Fight Club"

I have to take my hat off to these Doctor Who novels. I started reading them just because. But each one has left a taste in my mouth so to speak and I feel more like reading these days.

Probably should just read more fiction than non fiction like I used to.

Reamde at the moment. It's really hard to get into...it keeps changing on me and it makes it hard to understand what the story is really about. Granted it's early and the book is doing the "get to know the character" bit but it's hard to care about this guy when they keep not talking about the things that are being talked about, if that makes sense. I mean they keep bringing up things that sound interesting and then don't mention it again so far. I'm hoping it gets better, I like his work.

Re: What are you currently reading?
Whoops! We all (meaning all of the Bolaño-philes in here) let the 30th anniversary of 9/11/73 pass without any mention of it. Whether or not he actually went down to Chile afterwards and got detained and all of that, this was certainly a moment that formed him as a writer and an artist. If you haven't read the stories in The Return, I think it's an underrated collection and has some good material in it that focuses on that period. Pick it up!
