Great episode. Other than Gumby, the sketches with all the old characters were just ok. Nothing standout. Gumby was fucking great. It was awesome seeing all three of them lose it. And more than once.

Eddie was much, much better in the original sketches. They were a lot funnier. The Family Dinner one was especially good. I liked that he kept cracking up throughout the episode.

I want to make many babies with Maya Rudolph.

What a fun episode. Gumby was the best return character of Murphy's but I did like Buckwheat's reveal. I liked Velvet Jones on Black Jeopardy but had higher expectations for a return to Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood.
The holiday cake sketch and elves at the end was fun and the pretaped Christmas dinner got some good laughs. Wasn't that the only video to air? (I know there's a cut for time piece with Aidy channeling Lizzo). The best parts of Weekend Update was the slide up guests, although Che & Jost doing each other's jokes made for some awkward reactions. Judge Jeanine spewing wine on Colin was a cheap but effective laugh.
Speaking of Lizzo she was great too.
Can we get Maya to host again?
No new show until Adam Driver on January 25. It will be his third time already.

No, sorry. I just hadn't seen anyone actually mention the performance. I haven't watched yet and I've been monitoring this thread and Biff was the first person I saw here that even mentioned how the perf was.

No, sorry. I just hadn't seen anyone actually mention the performance. I haven't watched yet and I've been monitoring this thread and Biff was the first person I saw here that even mentioned how the perf was.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Cold open was great until Baldwin showed up.

Loved the Beck Bennett joke during the monologue. Also just loved the premise. I’m sure Eddie was very nervous, it was great to see him surrounded by these guys he had such an influence on.

Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood: Perfect way to approach the classic skit. Not hysterical, but funny enough and an obvious way for Eddie to build a little confidence early in the show.

Holiday Baking Championship: Awesome. Glad they brought this back.

Holiday Toast: Meh.

Masked Singer: Nice to see Buckwheat, but they could’ve done something better to bring him back.

Black Jeopardy: We didn’t need a Velvet Jones appearance.

Oh we definitely needed a velvet Jones skit! Loved how they updated the circumstances of these characters and fit them into modern day. How to be an Instagram hoe was fantastic.

Also I laughed so goddamn hard for Gumby.

we hear that lizzo song (the first one she performed) on the radio all the time (my 9 year old makes us listen to that station in the car). i hate it. but that performance was kick ass with the full band. she brought it.

Everyone has heard that first song by now but I just realized that Lizzo fairly recently.
I've gotten to the age that I know some of the pop songs at any given moment but I have no idea who performs them.

Since this thread got bumped, some thoughts on the state of SNL:

They need to gut most of the cast and writing staff. I thought SNL was actually in a really good place a year or two ago but this season has been just death, with almost every almost episode containing at least one sketch that ranks among the worst things I've ever seen on the show, such as the Cheeto museum, Chance the Rapper floating on wires, any sketch involving dogs (seriously, whoever it is on the writing staff that clearly is obsessed with dogs needs to be fired immediately), etc. - like sketches that barely have any identifiable comedic premise whatsoever.

I've liked Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong in past seasons but they have become insufferable, one-note crutches who hog airtime from funnier performers; they should've exited at least a season ago. Jost and Che have also well outstayed their welcome and I'm sick to death of them laughing at their own unfunny jokes on Weekend Update.

I don't have anything against Bryant, Moffat, or Day, but I think their SNL moment is over. I'm ready for new blood.

The show continues to bafflingly underuse the wonderful Melissa Villasenor, who appears in sketches so infrequently now it's easy to forget she's even in the cast anymore. The two other biggest assets in the cast, Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett, also are not being served well by the show at this point and would likely do much better by quitting and starting their own comedy show elsewhere. Their style and outlook is just too out there for squarer-than-it's-ever-been SNL.

On the other hand, Bowen Yang is a delight and I hope he doesn't get sidelined like Villasenor did. I like Redd and Nwodim too, and Thompson remains as reliable as ever.
