Bump on the Birbiglia conversation. I watched this special a few days ago on trag and bune's recommendation and I'm a fan. The part about his wife and the baby forming a new "we" hit close to home. He's a great storyteller.

I've started checking out his podcast, The Old Ones. You guys should seek it out if you haven't already. Good conversations with comedians about the biz and such.

I liked the podcast. I'd like it more if he kept it going but oh well.

also he's not a great comedian but you're right, he is a great storyteller. I first heard him on The Moth podcast.

Did you listen to the one he did with John Mulaney? He plays some old clips on that one that make him sound like a different comic altogether. That bit about drinking at the laundromat is pretty good, but nothing like The New One. I'm not sure I'd be into a whole album of his standup, yet I want to hear more of his stories. I hope that makes sense.

as someone who owns his first two albums, it does. the first one is more typical comedian stuff but the second is where he starts telling stories - shorter ones, ones that don't require you to pay as much attention because there aren't weird tangents - but it's a good start for him.

also when I heard that episode I did not know who Mulaney was. I've since caught up on him and he's also a favorite. His new netflix...special? show? is really great. If you've ever watched a children's television show from the 80's you should check it out.

He used to be on The Bob & Tom show a lot back when I was listening to them every morning. He was really funny.

I watched Sack Lunch Bunch while feeding the baby this AM. I didn't know what to think going into a kids show for adults, but there were so many hilarious moments. That restaurant bit had me rolling. And the Googi thing.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

yeah it was great. my son kept asking me "who's that?" because I was laughing at something that was only funny because the person on screen was on the screen.

I don't know how much they rehearsed with the kids but I loved the opening with that weirdo because it looked so real and not like he was reading anything. I read that they are almost all Broadway kids so they know what they're doing.

the focus group was hilarious because the kids played it so straight. "this is my most favorite movie ever." you said that about the last movie. "I'm so over that, this is my favorite movie now."

Yeah, the kids really were fantastic. The Girl Talk scene with Richard Kind definitely hinted at these kids' stage background.

Clearly these kiddos know the weight of some of the words they are saying? They really do sell it, making the whole thing very poignant and honest.

Also, where can I get one if those jackets?

We watched both the Birbigs special and Sack Lunch Bunch over the New Years break, they were both great. Gary Gulman's special that premiered on HBO last month was also fantastic, so don't sleep on it if you haven't watched it already.

his "in this economy" special is pretty good.

also: that special is not in any way similar to Sack Lunch Bunch so please keep that in mind. also if you're depressed or have a history of being depressed keep something happy nearby, yeah?

I went back to the first Birbigs album Dog Years and it had like one or two funny moments. a lot of it was proto stories that were tried out as jokes instead of stories and they really do work so much better as stories instead of just trying to fill some arbitrary time (I got a tight fifteen!).

that Ed picture from New Years made me think of Doug Benson in that he's still really good friends with a lot of people who made it much bigger than he is - like Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis - and that's gotta be weird. I mean he's 'famous' but he's not even close to their level.
