Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but it strikes me that pretty much nobody who has heard the album has given it rave reviews. There's a lot of "it was nice" and "I loved some of the songs", but nobody seems to be super hyped up and excited about it.

That's a little surprising to me; these kinds of listening parties seem tailor-made for you to come out of it being really positive about the experience (and, by extension, the record).

It doesn't sound as if they even hired a quiet room for it. Which is weird.

Most listening parties that I've heard of at least (I haven't been to one, although I have friends who have) were more like that. It was a meet-and-greet kind of with the album on. It's just that usually everybody kind of walks out high off the experience talking about how awesome it is; I'd assume it's part of the reason they have them.

That makes me pretty happy, but I'm aware that a lot of people here think they're awful, so they're probably predisposed to hate it.

I don't think so, but it's going to be one of the fast skiffly ones going by the rhythm. Little Lion Man or something?

To be honest, though, this band has never done one. So 1) maybe people have no idea how to act, 2) Backspacer wasn't amazing, and I'm sure any initial excitement is partly created by the previous album, or the precedent the band has set. A lot of people probably went to this out of curiosity rather than crazed fandom.

it sounds like (at least from the german one) that people's experience was soured by the atmosphere. Too loud. Too much press. Hard to hear.

Quiet listening parties are very rare. Intense initial bursts of excitement are not.

we've had three reviews and the longest one seemed pretty excited. I forget about the other two.

Of course i'd prefer someone came out and said 'oh my god this is the best thing ever'. On the other hand, I've never said that about any pj album after one listen, let alone a listen under sub par circumstances when I'm also so worried about remembering what I heard that I can't just listen

Plus a few loose comments, like Mirella's "I loved some of the songs, we all hated SBM" and a few others in that thread. The whole thing has an air of polite disappointment.

The last album that the fanbase was overall "meh" on was Riot Act, and I fucking love that album. Based on the three LB songs I've heard, I very much doubt this shares much in common musically with Riot Act. Maybe it's just a boring album. Even Brendan O'Brien seemed fairly lukewarm about it in that "it sounds like Pearl Jam" interview.

Why did you ask about it if you didn't like them?? Most M&M songs have the same rhythm, and that rhythm happens to be shared by SBM. I'm not saying the songs will sound similar.

What are the chances of all three listening parties giving negative reactions to Sleeping By Myself causing them to replace it last minute on the track list???? It genuinely sounds like the biggest WtF part of the album from the reviews I've read, and rightfully so, I mean serious what the fuck man?

It's better than a reworked version of Ole
