Re: Not worthy of a thread News
That graph doesnt seem right. I am skeptical a 1%er earned on average effectively over $1M a year back then (or now). I would suggest it's intentionally deceptive to promote class warfare by lumping together households with wildly different incomes, like saying LeBron and I combined for an average of 13ppg in 2018.McParadigm wrote:The triumph of the rich, which is one of the defining stories of our time, is generally described as largely the reflection of two factors. The first, of course, is the explosion of income among top earners, in which a tiny minority has vacuumed up a ballooning share of the gains from the past few decades of economic growth.
The second factor — which will be key to the 2020 presidential race — has been the hidden decline in the progressivity of the tax code at the top, in which the wealthiest earners have over those same decades seen their effective tax rates steadily fall.
Put those two factors together, and they tell a story about soaring U.S. inequality that is in some ways even more dramatic than each is on its own.

“I think these findings are purposefully misrepresentative of the rich” (posts data that omits a principle source of income for the rich)

This reeneforces my point, the 0.1% (and higher) skew the numbers substantially.McParadigm wrote:“I think these findings are purposefully misrepresentative of the rich” (posts data that omits a principle source of income for the rich)

Saving this for five years from now when we’re back to debating the necessity of government-mandated oversight
The number of children ingesting rare-earth magnets — powerful tiny balls that are a popular desk toy and can shred a child’s intestines — has skyrocketed in the three years since courts blocked the efforts of federal regulators to force changes to the industry, which largely holds the power to regulate itself.
The nation’s poison control centers are on track to record six times more magnet ingestions — totaling nearly 1,600 cases — this year than in 2016, when a federal court first sided with industry to lift the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s four-year ban on the product. Medical researchers say the only explanation for the spike is the return of these unusually strong magnets to the market after the court ruling.

when my son was little we got one of those magnet ball toys for Christmas from some relative. He loved playing with them and we didn't have a problem until one day I had to do the baby Heimlich on him.
