 As someone who's suffered through a horrendous baseball season, a little pre-season hope is welcome.

I've also had a horrendous baseball season (Giants) - I'll probably have a horrendous hockey season as well (Flames), but I'm looking forward to it.

I don't know how many of you have played Eastside Hockey Manager, but this looks pretty close to that. The one cool thing about this one is you can start as far back as the 1947-48 season. I haven't played it yet, so I have no idea if it's any good.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of the Flames hiring Brian Burke, I think we can all agree the big mistake was not firing Jay Feaster.

I think that's coming. I don't see Burke taking that job without an idea he's going to be GM. You can't really fire your GM a week before training camp.

Anyone attending training camp? I had extra time off so I'll be at the Avs camp when they open on Thursday and Friday. Can't wait. I'm ready for some hockey.

Went to the Avs rookie camp to get a bit of a hockey fix before training camp. MacKinnon is quite the skater.

There's a lot of unsigned UFA's that are still useful NHL players, more so than in the past. I wonder what will happen with them.

Yeah, I was really surprised to see Mason Raymond on a try-out with the Leafs. I think he would make a good third-liner, but I was surprised he hadn't found a contract yet.

So Dan Cleary gets a three-year deal with a no-trade clause at a $2.75 million cap hit from a team that's already $2 million over the cap.

Oh, Flyers. :luv:

Oh, Flyers. :luv:
Don't they get under the cap when the season starts and Pronger goes toi the Injured Reserve List?
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

I think so. Also, capgeek has 25 players in their cap calculation, so their number is a little high. The Flyers will be cutting it close though.

They'll be cutting it close this year, but I think the concern should be the next two years. For 2014-15, they have roughly $10 million to sign:

- an extension for Brayden Schenn
- an extension for Steve Mason
- another goalie
- Matt Read as a UFA
- at least two defensemen (they have Schenn, Grossman, Coburn and Streit under contract)

I know the cap is likely to go up, but... that's not a whole lot of room to fill some massive holes.

 Holmgren definitely has some kind of aversion to cap space.
