so if all these primaries end with like 4 people more or less getting 20% of the delegates and there is not a clear winner, who picks the Democratic candidate? superdelegates? i recall hearing they changed the process somehow but am too lazy to read. looking to me like there are enough stubborn candidates in this thing to make this drag out all the way and split the votes

Pretty sure that Tom Perez and Joe Biden fellate each other and call it a nomination

Second ballot during which super delegates are in play.

thanks. guess we can chalk that scenario up to a Biden victory then, assuming he doesn't croak first

It'll depend on how the delegates are split and what kind of backroom deals go down. For instance, if Sanders and Warren have a joint majority I could see them sharing the ticket. If Biden isn't the leader and the superdelegates give it to him he'll lose to Trump. Mark it now.

aha so there is strategy to Biden-Buttigieg and Warren-Sanders teaming up - I like it - this could get spicy

I might be wrong on this but my understanding is that the first round is basically set by the primary results, every delegate has to vote for their candidate, but that in the second round not only are the superdelegates in play but the regular delegates are "released," so to speak. Which could be pandemonium but more likely would be something like Klobuchar's smaller pile being leveraged for a position in someone else's administration.

Mayor Pete could do well in the first 3 states and get some kind of bounce, but so far there isn't any reason to believe he's that competitive beyond those states. His RCP national poll average is half of Warren's (7.5 vs 14.8). I don't think he's going to have many delegates at the convention. I also wonder how long Warren would stay in the race if she was a distant 3rd behind Biden & Bernie. But she will probably have a good few more delegates than Pete. If she & Bernie share at the convention, it could be enough.
