There are two main examples that are varying degrees of good but ultimately unsuccessful as far as concept goes: BINAURAL and BACKSPACER.

Binaural has more of a commitment to the idea of going for mood above all. But they chickened out at the very end and brought BOB in to add some pizzazz. In retrospect, I wish they went all the way with the whole "this is our Pink Floyd album", even though I quite like what they accomplished anyway.

Backspacer is another missed opportunity in that regard. I wish they would have went all the way with "this is our Cars record." A tight 35-minute album that is filled with upbeat, punchy tunes that lean in on the heretofore unexplored lighter side of Pearl Jam. Basically a whole record with the feel of The Fixer, Johnny Guitar, Got Some, etc. Instead, I think they got about halfway there and it turned into half a conventional Pearl Jam record.

I agree and what they’re doing instead reeks of desperation.

Like snatch said, just seems like some half-baked idea an advertising agency came up. It may as well be the launch of a new soft drink.

It doesn't feel desperate to me. Maybe a tad misguided. But it just seems like a way to engage fandom. *shrugs*

I'll tell you what will engage their fans: good new music!

Dance of Clairvoyance to drop 1/24. Lower tempo song. Very present synth throughout. Dark vibe with a constant drum beat which sounds almost 80’s new wave style in its production.

This from someone who knows someone from Spotify who’s supposedly heard it. At this point I guess it’s part of the fun.
