Given the way music has been these last few years, it's pretty expected. I'd be more surprised by fewer/no synths.

Like snatch said, just seems like some half-baked idea an advertising agency came up. It may as well be the launch of a new soft drink.

It doesn't feel desperate to me. Maybe a tad misguided. But it just seems like a way to engage fandom. *shrugs*

I'll tell you what will engage their fans: good new music!

The strange thing to me is the obscurity of it. The only people who will know about that billboard are 10c members or email subscribers. If Joe Blow is walking down the street and sees this strange, vague billboard, they’ll more than likely ignore it. BUT, if it piqued their curiosity, there’s no way for them to engage with it. How the hell are they supposed to know about some random FB or Instagram Lens? There’s no QR code, nothing else to scan in your native camera app.

But maybe this is just a thing for fans, and they know they’ll do the work and get the word out organically. Then Spin.com and Yahoo Music News picks it up, and Joe Blow is in the know.

I dunno, if you want to make something truly exploratory and let as many people discover it through happenstance, then it didn’t succeed.

Who knows what the purpose is.
