let me clarify. The first time I noticed a fadeout as something that seemed out of place. I think it is entirely dependent on how I first came to hear the song. I knew LW from the rough mix without the fade. I'm kinda used to L-bolt with the extended outro solo. Everything else was just how the song sounds.

But one would be to finish the last round of 'Ben' repetitions, then slow the guitar's down-strokes gradually to a halt, then KABLAM on the first or last chord of the sequence.

Yeah, that kinda thing could've happened to Rats also.

I'm sure there are examples of artistic, well placed and executed fade outs. But as a general rule, I'm totally against them.

I like that a fade out is used in Rival, I just wish they'd have waited another 30 seconds or so before applying it.

The Mynabirds probably have a fade out or two. But I can't think of one. So they obviously don't bother me. Maybe I don't really care. I guess, like most folks, I just hate it when I notice it.

I may be mistaken but I'm fairly sure it's only for the lyrics and McCready wrote the music entirely.

I'd need the CD liner notes to check, though; neither the Pearl Jam site nor Wikipedia are reliable in regards to writing credits.
