I don’t count kids and people that didn’t vote into that figure.

How about you just count the people that actually voted then?

in the US you set the bar high in the couple hundred millions and then inevitably settle for a fraction of that, but when it’s coming down from a really big number it still leaves you with a big number
Yes, I’m sure he’s had a tough time after this incident.

My point stands, 62,98 million voted for him. Not a good place for the country, if all those are considered; racists, idiots, etc.

They aren’t all racist. They are all willing to at least humor some flagrantly racist actions and statements in exchange for maintaining their tribe’s hold on power. That’s an exchange they are willing to make.

They also, as a group, tend to respond fairly to xenophobic bullying. Trump’s popularity with Republican voters had slumped to 70% when he told four freshman Democratic congresswomen to “go back to their own countries.” His favorability within his party shot up by 5 points immediately, and by 10 points over the subsequent month, with respondents specifically pointing to that attack as an event that inspired their renewed support.

They aren’t all idiots. Quite a lot of them are. Sorry. There isn’t a point where the size of the crowd negates the reality. Depending on which poll you use, 49 to 57% of them rated the theory that Democrats and celebrities maintain a secret pedophilia cult ring in a pizza place as either “completely true” or “mostly true.” Half of Republicans look at that sentence and think, yah know what? It checks out.

They aren’t all cultists. But many of them are. As a group, they rate Trump above Lincoln. Don Jr and Ivanka are among the top polled choices among Republican voters for 2024 candidates.

They’re not all evangelical ‘end of days’ fetishists, but a lot of them are. Evangelical Christians are the only religious group Trump maintains a majority favorability with. 57% rate the statement “God wanted Donald Trump to be president” as “completely true.” By comparison, just 19% believe Barack Obama would be raptured to heaven.

What’s lacking in all of the polling of the last three years is a principled conservative pushback on policy. Every president faces intra-party crises....moments where the choices they make mismatch with the party philosophy, and they have to reconcile that. Trump blows up deficits, and suddenly deficits are fine. Trump loves despots, and suddenly despots are fine. Bailouts are terrible. JK they’re great. Republicans say he didn’t withhold the money from Ukraine but 47% say if he had it would have been impeachable. Then it turns out he did it, and suddenly less than 6% think that’s an impeachable offense. Trump bashes the intelligence community as liars and worse, and therefore that’s what Republicans believe they are. Now he complains that people are being disrespectful of the intelligence community because they don’t believe his Iran spin, and magically the intelligence community is suddenly polling as exceptionally trustworthy by Republicans.

A party that does not under any circumstance separate itself from the opinion or desires of its current leader is not a functioning, healthy part of a democratic political institution.

Funny how he just crumbled away. Didn't even really try to defend his strong man Donald when the going got tough.

Hopefully you’ll reach a point again where both sides in Washington can cooperate. More bipartisan politics would be a good thing.

how do you imagine that looks? Take a topic. Say, climate change. 84% of Democrats see that as a major problem in need of aggressive responses. Only 27% of Republicans think it represents a threat, and even among that group, there’s no real support for governmental action.

258 of the 300 bills the House has passed since the midterms had bipartisan authorship. McConnell is letting them all sit and rot. I don’t know how “both sides” fix that.

27% is a depressingly small number. Not easy to find solutions then.

I'd love to live in a world where the answer was simply "can't we all just get along?", but that's not reality in American politics right now. The GOP, as essentially led by Mitch McConnell, is the problem. And it has been for a long time now.
