I'm not excited about a preachy album about how to be better towards the environment.

However, I'm fully excited if it's a concept album focusing on a potential future scenario of during/post global warming.

Kind of akin to Midnight Oils 'Red Sails in the Sunset' post apocalyptic album.

Wishful thinking, but I'd love a moody synth laden album on that.

Whatever your stance on environmental politics do you really want this? An environmental screed of a PJ album? I doubt it. I am actually kind of intrigued if they go in a spacey/synthy direction musically. The artwork/typography gives off a bit of a “Binaural” vibe to me (which also involved a new producer). I’d be down with something more in that vein.
Climate change isn't about environmental politics it's about an existential threat to our planet. But who needs hard hitting, sobering subject matter when you can sing about the stupid bullshit that has been on the last two records, right?
That’s a false dichotomy. PJ/Ed can write interesting, philosophical and pointed lyrics without turning it into an on-the-nose musical diatribe. I hope they don’t go in that direction. That’s all I am saying.
Where are the examples in this bands history of anything at all philosophical? Does Ed even have a GED? Regardless, there is nothing philosophical about science. If they've chosen climate change as subject matter make it on the nose. Bash our faces in with it.
Are you being serious right now? You need a GED to be philosophical? Do you know what the word philosophy even means? My larger point stands: they’ve gotten political many times without being overtly obvious about it (all of Avocado and most of Riot Act except for Bushleaguer for example). The earth is going through a warming phase. The how and the why and the what we can do about it are very much open for discussion as are the political ramifications. The current end of the world fervor actually seems more like fundamentalist Christian apocalyptic fear mongering to me ironically...
You know what is overtly obvious? The science backing climate change. Life must be nice in your safe bubble where there are "warming phases" and "smart Eddies".

Bowie just dropped an album without any announcement. It was fucking glorious.

Too right, Sarge. That'd be bloody marvelous.

Now let's chuck another koala on the barbie.

Tour starting before the album is out is nothing new. Backspacer tour started like a month before the album released. Lightning Bolt a few days.

It’s been quite a long time since the band last played live, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a low key warm-up show before the Canadian shows.

Wonder when they play SNL, since there’s been rumblings about that. The tour dates don’t really allow it to happen during the tour.

Also, they didn’t mention anything about that rumored Sirius XM show did they?

Has someone gathered up all the info we have gotten? It's so difficult to read through this whole thread every time I want to look something up.

I don't think I listened to a full album or show during 2019, maybe just the odd song and then it was pretty rare.

I'm really looking forward to this album.

Holy shit, my login still works...

I'm intrigued by this. So intrugued I felt the desire to visit and post here for the first time in ages.

The last 3 records did nothing for me, and I expected little when they came out. I think I still have relatively low expectations but I'm certainly intrigued by Mike's explanation, by the artwork etc...

If we get something genuinely different I will give it a good spin.

Given previous statements I wouldn’t be going by much of anything that mike says.

Mike the classic used car salesman/ bullshit artist. If he says it’s going to be great, it’s probably going to be mediocre. If he says it’s dark, we might get Brittany Spears.

Mike on Lightning Bolt:

If you're a Pearl Jam fan you're going to love it," says a proud Mike of the album, "and even if you're not, maybe it'll turn you into one!"

And the guitarist believes that taking their time has definitely paid off.

"I think it's helped. I think it's going to be really cool record and I'm very excited about it. Every artist says that about their new thing but I feel like we've been through a long journey to get there and it was totally worth it."

I like the idea of it being "confused and dark", with some synth.

I've always wondered what PJ could do in a Lanegan "Blues Funeral"-type space. Jeff and Stone would eat it up.

i wish they were a fraction as prolific as mark. Mark is probably my third favorite artist, and with a few exceptions I generally like about half of the songs on one of his albums. but with 1-2 albums a year the stakes are so much lower.
