Agree. Doesn't even matter what Trump wants. A new president will be sworn in on either 1/20/21 or 1/20/25. Trump will be at their mercy at that point.

You're a fool if you don't think he is going to do whatever he can to stay in office. NY State is waiting for him. Now I hope that our checks and balances haven't degraded to the point Trump just decides he can stay put, but you're just not paying attention if you don't think that is exactly what he wants.meatwad wrote:I put shit like “Trump is going to install himself as president for life” in the same category as “Obama is a Muslim who was born in Kenya.”

Both can be true. And I suspect that they are.meatwad wrote:Which is it, that he didn’t want to win in the first place, or that he wants to be president for life?

Verb is absolutely correct in both instances.

You are diminishing trumps complete narcissism.bune wrote:I was thinking along these same lines. he clearly hates being targeted every single day so the only way this would make sense is from a complete totalitarian regime change and (hopefully) that's not happening in this lifetime.meatwad wrote:Jesus, you guys with the hysterics. He’s a shitty president but this idea that he’s going to somehow install himself as a dictator make you look ridiculous. Which is it, that he didn’t want to win in the first place, or that he wants to be president for life? Cognitive dissonance knows no political party or ideology friends.

Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
I would say that in 2016, I don’t believe he really thought he would win the primary or the general election, which may be in part why he was so off the cuff at the time and was engaging in a combination of ego massaging and getting a particular message out about a culture that swung far towards PC overindulgence. Somehow he won, which surprises everyone - but once he got the job I do not think he anticipated that anyone could restrain him. Now that he has seen those constraints, I think he wants to do whatever he can to erase them. He must be looking on with awe at Putin who announces he wants to consolidate power for himself when his presidential term is up, and the response from his government is everyone resigns so he can do what he wants.

Sure, there were Obama conspiracy nuts. I don't recall Obama openly advocating for some of the stuff that Trump is "just joking" about though. You're comparing apples and watermelons.meatwad wrote:LOL a you sound like the people who swore Operation Jade Helm was Obama preparing to round up conservatives.verb_to_trust wrote:You're a fool if you don't think he is going to do whatever he can to stay in office. Trump is a bonafide troll, not sure what else you’d expect from him. It doesn’t mean he has the power or authority to engineer a takeover of the government. Democrats control the House and he’s three senators away from a minority there. I think that despite their overwhelming support of him, there are principled Republicans who would never allow such a constitutional travesty to happen. Hell, Matt Gaetz just voted to limit his authority of all people.
I guess I just have more faith in our country and its institutions, no matter how battered and bruised they currently are.

has anyone actually defined what a "perfect phone call" is? because at this point it's almost "I love lamp!" levels of discourse.

I'm glad you feel that way meatwad, because when I look at what 38-50% of our country, (Fox News viewers and conservative radio listeners), believe or don't believe on a daily basis I sincerely get concerned about the courage of principled Republicans. Your optimism makes me feel better about our prospects.

Far more than 38-50% used to believe that African-Americans were subhuman trash. Or that gays shouldn’t be allowed to marry one another. Believe me, I don’t by any stretch think it’s all sunshine and rainbows, I just think it’s more productive to try and put things in perspective than give in to hopelessness and fear.Hatfield wrote:meatwad wrote:Trump is a bonafide troll, not sure what else you’d expect from him. so is Justice Roberts empowered in this process to pull rank at some point if need be and just basically declare: 'yes this evidence clearly points to him being guilty, fuck you all, throw him in the slammer'
that would be a breath of fresh air

Unfortunately, no. Roberts is pretty hand-tied in this whole thing.

I don't really understand what "preside over" means if he can't force an impartial trial.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?
