I don't think this is a drum machine. This is Matt''s drumming heavily compressed and EQ'ed. While also being quantized, which is the new standard in today's music and a first for this band.

are there live bands that compress and EQ their drums live? I am not that interesting and am not up to speed.

At this point my thought is, they did this in the studio, but it may sound better live on a normal drum set

things that I like:

- Production values do sound improved
- Potential for live adjustments / development seems interesting. For example, I doubt matt or mike will want to just sit there and do nothing while a drum machine plays
- If I were ever to explore jamming a 12 inch dildo up my ass, and making out with the closest man standing near me, this is the song that would probably compel me to do that

things i don’t like

- Drum machine bits are too sterile
- Have no idea how Mike will overlay a standard pentatonic scale solo over too of this

I'm with joostone, I also think it's Matt's heavily compressed kit. But let's just assume that it is a drum machine. Why would they do that?

Because Matt is going to come out front to sing lead vocal while Eddie leads the dance. That's the only plausible explanation.

Yes. This happens all the time. What you hear on a live show is already compressed by the inhouse soundengineers. With drum sounds like these there must will be a more EQ and compression. You also often see a electronic drumkit being used, the St Vincent liveband is a good example of bpth ways.
But I don't think PJ would go that far in a live show. Matt is really really tight and can play on the beat, so that really helps to pull this off.

I can only imagine Josh Evans role as soundengineer in liveshows will become much much bigger.
