Be prepared for the new single to both divide and bring the PJ fanbase together next week. It’s an interesting track even if that Simmons clip sounds like a ringtone I’ve heard before. It’s buoyant. If you rewind back of lead singles:
Mind Your Manners- felt like forced populist punk rock
The Fixer- PJ’s take on a pop song.
WWS- their first rock pop song attempt.
I Am Mine- perhaps their best lead single and when you figure in that it still gets performed live...
NAIS- solid Pink Floyd-esque jam that was deemed a little weird when it was released.
Given To Fly- timeless.
Who You Are- a deep cut and always great to experience live
STBC/Not For You- one of these two is a PJ classic.
Go/Daughter- classics.
Alive- still alive after all these years.

Pearl Jam is still a relevant band with a fanbase community that (at times) supersedes new music. Think about the Stones in 89 (roughly the same age as PJ is now). Now, find a diehard Stones fan and ask them to name 2 or 3 songs from that album or what songs they want to hear live. Are any of those cuts from Steel Wheels? Pearl Jam is still relevant. The Stones were clawing back to notoriety status in the face of all else.

PJ will take the occasional left turn and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I wouldn’t want to be fully vested in a band that mails it in and cookie cuts their sound to sound like yesterday’s carbon copy. As a fan of music, I appreciate when bands do something different. PJ, while loyal to their fanbase, isn’t going to subject their art for the status quo. We’re all pretty lucky to have a band that is still pushing the colors to creative boundaries we aren’t privy too. Got Some was the first track performed from Backspacer...

I’d welcome your aversion to the comparison. Are you referring to the comparison to their age from 1989 to 2020? The above wasn’t a comparison in terms of either band’s music so when you have quality to back up what it is you are attempting to infer or state, then you have a leg to stand on. Is the BRY board still operational? Now, THAT was the best PJ message board back in the day. Like you (perhaps), fans didn’t get much out of The Pit but if you wanted a productive debate, then BRY was the destination. RM was 2nd. Always #2.
