this and GoT made me appreciate endgame even more for so effectively wrapping up a story I care about.

I'm still really disappointed in the cynicism that seems to have guided this movie's creative path.

Problem: Incels are so mad about Rose Tico existing at all that they hounded Kelly Marie Tran until she left social media. We want their money.
Solution: No more Rose Tico.

Problem: Uptight old dudes and culturally authoritarian governments might throw a fit if Poe is gay. We want their money.
Solution: Here's Poe's ex girlfriend. We'll toss a background kiss in to make ourselves look diversity-brave.

Problem: Some people think Rey is a Mary Sue. We want their money.
Solution: Here's an otherwise completely unnecessary training montage. Also, let's have the movie tell us that Rey won't accept Luke Skywalker's lightsaber until she is worthy of it. That's pretty on the nose.

Problem: The last movie presented a complex, imperfect universe in need of new ideas, new ambitions....a new hope. Boy did that upset some people. We want their-
Solution: Palpatine Skywalker Palpatine Skywalker Palpatine!!!

Problem: Tossing in another Death Star would be incredibly lazy and dumb, but we need the biggest most awesome finisher of all time. For money!
Solution: Death Star.

It's more cynical than that because their solutions were for mostly imaginary straw men they themselves concocted to convince themselves the previous movies really weren't that bad. They failed to satisfy anyone because they assumed their critics were just sexist racist incels and not people with valid criticisms.

I think the problem with some of these (and really the Palpatine decision), is that it actually really makes it difficult for this final chapter to tell a satisfying story IMO. They might have thought they were shifting to safer storytelling ground by reintroducing Palpatine as the Big Bad, but it actually forces them into a storyline that feels way more convoluted than it needed to be otherwise. Some of the decisions seem odd in retrospect, but that one really hinders the plot, since the premise kind of hinges on it.

this is the star wars that feels most like an EU novel (at least the classic EU novels), which is generally not a compliment. Way too much stuff crammed in, too much lore added at the expense of storytelling, and way too much of an interest in attaching every possible event to something that had already happened in a way that makes the universe feel too small.


It feels like star wars in a way that, for as large as this movie wanted to be, feels pretty unambitious. Again the performances are good and the iconography and visuals are there. It certainly looks like star wars, and for me that still goes a long way. But to me it seems like the prioritized wrapping up the 9 arc story (which didn't need much in the way of wrapping up beyond what they'd been doing) and did so at the expense of wrapping up the current story, which is the stuff I really cared about. Adding in the Emperor and making Rey his granddaughter, making this once again abut the sith vs. the jedi, drew way too much focus from what should have been the story of the Resistance vs. The First Order and Rey vs. Kylo. The former story is almost made irrelevant as the Emperor suddenly appears and gifts them a thousand star destroyers that the resistance is able to easily destroy because Lando made some calls. And Rey vs Kylo really just becomes a vehicle for finally defeated an already defeated emperor.

It is very star wars, but it's not, for me, the best parts of it.

having said that, this is not a movie (unlike, say, the prequels) where I am baffled by people really liking it. It IS doing something very star warsy, just not what I was hoping for out of it.
