I was just posting the other day how it walks a really fine line, using plenty of screentime to call out and portray the hypocrisy and emptiness of the church while still retaining a sense of grandeur and the church's awesome power. I don't want to get into it too much, but the new season does play a bit with the idea of the public perception of Francis vs. how hardline he actually is.

TBH I couldn't be less interested in secular art that's critical of the church. I get it, I know it - it's generally boring in art. I find I respond to the opposite (well, not quite the opposite, but sort of) quite more, in fact: few things move me more than deeply felt Catholic-y beliefs expressed through art (and it doesn't happen very often in movies these days). I think Mel Gibson and Zack Snyder have a lot of that.

FWIW, The Righteous Gemstones isn't really secular, per se. McBride has immediate family members who've devoted their lives to the world of megachurches, and he's drawing on his experience to explore that world in a comical way.

6 Underground is a masterpiece. No joke at all.

I was watching this and that first car chase had me thinking "man, I wish LV were here so I could see the look of joy on his face." The only part that I didn't like was how goofy Ryan played his role only to have him disarm someone at a pro level and have #7 say "we're going to have to talk about this" and they never do but he goes back to being goofy #1. that was literally the only part of the movie I had an issue with because it stopped being a ridiculous movie and took itself seriously for a few seconds so it took you out of what was going on.

also: have you watched The Man Who Killed Don Quixote? That's the other movie I watched with WWLVD in my mind because it's so...improper...for what a film should be and do throughout.

I dunno, I don’t think it’s a ridiculous movie; it often takes itself plenty seriously. There’s real emotion and growth at play in the characters and their relationships - that’s one of the reasons I love it. It’s the first movie I’ve ever liked Reynolds in because Bay used his smartass humor as a means of developing the character since he’s a detached guy with a fear of intimacy who’s using it a shield.

Have not seen Quixote yet. Gilliam can go either way for me, but Pryce and Driver sure sweeten the deal.

I think we are using different meanings of ridiculous because I loved the movie for all the reasons you stated. I'm more referring to the use of explosives in all of the barrels and souvenir stands and the over the top violence and gore (the grenade through the jaw for example) that made the movie amazing, I couldn't stop marveling at it.

and yeah, that's a great read on the way Bay used Reynolds.

A year prior to the release Ryan Reynolds posted a video on Instagram of himself talking about how quiet Michael Bay's movies are, while in the background a car explodes. This scene is in the movie and you can actually see Reynolds in the background filming the video for this post.

I need to watch it again to see this.

I really want to see this.

It was very different. Sometimes excellent, with a sort of laidback humor, and a satire on the art world, and the world we live in. But then sometimes it seems to swing a wide punch and just miss, and other times the movie feels like it doesn't know what it wants to focus on. However, I came away from it amused, instead of annoyed. The best scenes were electric, and very memorable. Worth seeing.

As good as the other two. The logical extension of the second movie. Bring on chapter four!

The Neighbor's Window.

It's a short film nominated for an Oscar and available to watch on YouTube. It's only like 20 minutes, but it's a good story of envy, with a careful what you wish for type of thing going on.

I've never really watched the short film nominations but may check a few more out after this.
