This exactly
We’ve had a lot of clunky choruses on the last couple albums. This one is not

Cool tune. Excited to hear the rest of the album

You may notice that the things I liked about it don't really have to do with the songwriting

I hate almost everything the band has done for the last 15 years and I like this song. Ignore Jorge's quibbles and follow me to find your true authentic self.

It is super weird, but I really am having fun with it.

Very David Bowie...

Bill Frisell, one of the greatest jazz melodists working today, that Bill Frisell?

I’m in a bit of a state of shock at the moment. I had given up hope on a new Tool album and they blew it out the park, and I was nearing that point with PJ and we get this, which I love, just months later. I’m amped.

First listen in the car.

5/10 and I think I’m being nice. I don’t want to be too negative. I liked the ending. I wish the song was a bit more subtle in its production. Could be great live.

Ed has kinda lost the plot. I have been listening to 77 from talking heads a fair bit over the last few years. so I really struggled with the vocal delivery. He’s trying a bit too hard. I’m excited to see what other suprises are on this album.
I don’t think it has much replay value. and maybe be about as cool as backspacer this time next year.

lol i don't give a fuck about Frisell's approach to melody, I don't find it particularly amazing. I like the atmosphere of his recordings and interplay between musicians (and silent spaces). So that was more what I was referring to.
It sounds like you're directing me to listen for feel and texture rather than the things I enjoy most about music, which are melody, harmony and rhythm; and I can listen to music that emphasizes those things, but if there's nothing in the other departments that's grabbing me, it's going to slip from my grip. My favorite Pearl Jam songs are my favorites because I think they're great compositions. This ain't it

This song has me completely excited 100%. I haven’t felt this way in 15 years or so about Pearl Jam. This is the first sign in a decade and a half that they have a different musical direction to pursue. I’m stoked. Wherever this leads, it’s definitively a new direction. That’s what we’ve been begging for. Guess what, we fucking got it. If Jeff is genuinely excited about the direction of the band, I am too. There is so much to be excited about this song. It could have gone a few ways, mostly bad, but somehow Pearl Jam found a way to surprise again. Stand back when the spirit comes. Stand back!

There's an obvious and horrible production fuck up in the second chorus that cuts in the middle of the word 'leaves'...

...other than that, very pleasantly surprised with the mix, songwriting, and creativity on all fronts. Pretty excited about the new album now.

I'm still not going to see 'em live at effing Pepsi Center!

...and everyone here needs to just calm the fuck down... Jeez!
