the U2 discoteque comment in the replies seems like a good creative comparison (even though zooroopa came first). Although I think Discoteque is the better song (not knocking this one at all by saying that) this is more of a creative departure

lol i don't give a fuck about Frisell's approach to melody, I don't find it particularly amazing. I like the atmosphere of his recordings and interplay between musicians (and silent spaces). So that was more what I was referring to.

It sounds like you're directing me to listen for feel and texture rather than the things I enjoy most about music, which are melody, harmony and rhythm; and I can listen to music that emphasizes those things, but if there's nothing in the other departments that's grabbing me, it's going to slip from my grip. It's really difficult for me to imagine anyone's reaction to this being anything than immediate joy and relief.

I put it on my headphones for the first time walking out of my office tonight and must have been grinning from ear to ear walking through the city.

It felt like a very welcome gift that I had no expectation I would ever receive.

Wow. This is so, so good on headphones!

I was afraid of what this song might be like after hearing the short clips but I am pleasantly surprised that it is very melodic and catchy (the outro is stuck in my head) despite being left field for PJ.

My main issue with their more experimental stuff has always been that the songs don't grab me melodically and are too hard to get into, however accomplished musically they maybe. I know most of the people here prefer a No Code type album but I don't. If THIS is the kind of experiment they want to do, I'm all in.

From someone who got into PJ purely because of Ed's singing, I don't think he's doing anything special on this song technically but then the song doesn't cry out for it either. His phrasing is great and the vocals have a kind of atmospheric feel to them which is reminiscent somewhat of Ten for me rather than Binaural.

The outro just rules.

super excited about this album. the song has some new influences-the drums sound like they were lifted from a strokes song, and i there's a sort of prince feel. maybe its not prince, maybe its foster the people. either way, im excited!
