After a few listens today, it does seem like it benefits from Ed having something he feels the need to see overcome. For all the experimentation, that’s the actual “return to form” feeling here. The balance of anger/despair and raw determination is the most Pearl Jam element of this song, and something that hasn’t felt...present? Authentic? Or just like an honest creative guide? For a while.

The authenticity missing in their past few albums is very present here.
Spotify algorithm is drunk trying to find a song to follow this. Worst transition was Only Wanna Be With You by Hootie and the Blowfish. Best was definitely Spirit of the Radio by Rush.
As for Peal Jam songs, Spotify followed with Go and it worked surprisingly well. Would be interesting live.

Fair point. They came with a computer. I reuse them whenever I get a new one. I've had them since 2004 or something so I got used to considering them computer speakers but I could see why the assumption could be made I meant the internal speakers in a laptop or something. You always set me straight McP.
It says a lot about this band that they can produce this kind of work at this point in their career. Ed losing some of his range and vocal identity, writing 1 generic album in the last 7 years, then making the decisions that led to a song like DotC?! The production is wonderful, Ed staying in his range and even expanding what that range can accomplish with all of those vocal tracks at the end, Stone's sick bass line, Mike's understated perfection and Matt the human drum machine showing so much restraint, and NO FADE OUT! I can't believe how great this is and I can't wait to see what they put on the rest of the record.
So according to that poll on top RM is not divided on this song and everyone feels pretty positive for the most part...
On the other hand, I can’t go on Facebook today with all the whining and carrying on about how terrible the song is. I guess this truly is a vacuum outside the prototypical fan base.
Well I didn't notice any members of the band floating around in front of a green screen playing air guitar with the images in the background, so that must be coming in Mach 2, right?

Pearl Jam finally listened to RM's suggestions and this is the thanks they get.

Absolutely the worst part of listening to this song on Spotify. For some reason, even one of the best algorithms in the world thinks that my playing "Pearl Jam in the year 2020" automatically translates to "take me back to Seattle circa 1992 or some cheap ass knockoff version of that".

My Spotify followed it with Do the Evolution which worked really well. It'll definitely be interesting to see where this one shows up in set lists - Maybe You Are is it's closest relative in terms of style. Who knows...maybe this will be an opener.
