Truly an amazing game, the mechanics and concept are just fascinating, even if they have been aped by other devs in the years since. But way too much of a deep dive for the amount of time I have available.

Has anyone played any of the XCom smells-alikes, that are maybe simpler and easier to dive into for 45 mins at a time?
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
is that really the same style of gameplay?
I've never played X-Com 2, but I've seen the two games compared on numerous sites/videos.

It's far simpler and did not adequately scratch the xcom itch for me.

Edit - I didn't see that that is exactly what you're looking for

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is an excellent game. I give it my highest recommendation. What about the new Fire Emblem. I own Xcom and Rabbids, but haven't played them yet.

They're turn based* strategy games, but yeah--shit was fire. What faction did you play the most? Love me some Fortress, with their Gorgons and shit.

Dungeon my dude. Two ranged attacks and the dragons were devastating.

I don't know why I referred to XCOM and HOM&M as RTS, they are so obviously turn-based. Huge brain fart.

Dungeon was dope for their decked out mage guild. Maxing out earth magic and being lucky enough to learn implosion was a game-winner. Armageddon was also dope for when you were down to nothing but a stack of black dragons, as to those fuckers are magic immune. :nice:

I've been playing Mario 3D World with the 5-year old. World 4 is about where it becomes unplayable with the two of us together. :(

Haha that is a great game but can be tough with two players. Yet you need two players to get all of the items

the lives run out so fast when you're playing with more than one person. especially a kid!

takes some of the fun out of it if you're playing with adults but takes a lot of frustration out if you're playing with kids.

He gets too frustrated with the later levels and doesn't like it when he ends up in the bubble. Plus there's something unnerving about hearing your kid yelling "Daddy don't leave me behind!"

:haha:

there were a lot of times where my wife and son would just bubble up and say 'get us through this level'. which is fine but the bubbles fucking seek you out man and it's hard to play against them and the game.

I got everything with just 1 player. I never beat that last bonus level though.
