welcome (back) to the board!hidinginlowlight wrote:I used to post here in the mid-00s, and this board was super important to how I discovered new music throughout that decade. I don't think I posted at all in the 2010s though, so it's great to be sufficiently excited by something that the band has released that I want to post again. I know this just echoes what so many other have said, but I really didn't think the band had anything as out of their comfort zone as DOTC left in them.
Stone's comments about the rest of Gigaton have me a bit worried, but I'm hoping that we're supposed to interpret his quote as three things (some variety, some straightforward rockers, and some ballads) rather than two (variety consisting of straightforward rockers and ballads). Somehow it doesn't make sense to me that the band would realize that it's a good idea to keep "Can't Deny Me" off the album and also realize that DOTC is a compelling first single, but then go ahead and fill the rest of the album with generic short punkish rock songs anyway.
(and, as always, stand back when the spirit comes)

oof. i should have expected the too-cool crowd to scoff at the idea of a rock band playing rock music. it's possible to be creative and new and inventive and still make rock music. not feel that they have to jump 3 bridges to get to a new genre. the folks like you probably want a setlist full of Sleight of Hand and I'm Open huh?evenslow wrote:LoathedVermin72 wrote:I think you made a mistake, here's the website you're looking for: http://www.facebook.comMikeyIsGod wrote:funny. i have the opposite outlook. here's to hoping this is the You Are of the album and the rest is actual rock music from a rock band.cutuphalfdead wrote:DOTC is good but the album will still likely suck.

Why do some Pearl Jam fans always think in terms of setlists, what will or won't work in a live setting, or what "brings the show to a halt"? What a weird way to approach art

I'm happy for them to make songs that are not necessarily for playing live. I mean, it's not like they have a shortage of tracks to play.

They should pull a Steely Dan and just stop touring, it would be funny to watch the concert bros cry

i mean they've got 10 albums of stuff like that which should be plenty of rock music to choose from. after 30 years let's hear something completely different.MikeyIsGod wrote:oof. i should have expected the too-cool crowd to scoff at the idea of a rock band playing rock music. it's possible to be creative and new and inventive and still make rock music. not feel that they have to jump 3 bridges to get to a new genre. the folks like you probably want a setlist full of Sleight of Hand and I'm Open huh?evenslow wrote:LoathedVermin72 wrote:I think you made a mistake, here's the website you're looking for: http://www.facebook.comMikeyIsGod wrote:funny. i have the opposite outlook. here's to hoping this is the You Are of the album and the rest is actual rock music from a rock band.cutuphalfdead wrote:DOTC is good but the album will still likely suck.

i don't mean it that way. i was just using that as an example of how so many PJ fans on here seem to dislike the very style/songs that made them popular in the first place: hook-laden, guitar solo, emotive rock songs. i realize they've done that very well numerous times but guess what - that's been happening for 70 years. perhaps there are still really good songs like that out there to be written? i'm not saying i hate DOTC but i find it nowhere near what i love about PJ.theplatypus wrote:Why do some Pearl Jam fans always think in terms of setlists, what will or won't work in a live setting, or what "brings the show to a halt"? drum machine + synth + droning bass line = electronica.LoathedVermin72 wrote:It’s funny that anyone is suggesting DOTC isn’t rock music
i understand matt recorded the drums live tracing over his drum machine loop but the soul of the song is electronica. just because there's a hint of guitar from mike doesn't make it rock.

I'm not a fan of DOTC either but I think it is cool that they're trying something new for them, especially after what could be their career nadir ("Can't Deny Me"). Those old songs aren't going to disappear from their repertoire.MikeyIsGod wrote:i don't mean it that way. i was just using that as an example of how so many PJ fans on here seem to dislike the very style/songs that made them popular in the first place: hook-laden, guitar solo, emotive rock songs. i realize they've done that very well numerous times but guess what - that's been happening for 70 years. perhaps there are still really good songs like that out there to be written? i'm not saying i hate DOTC but i find it nowhere near what i love about PJ.theplatypus wrote:Why do some Pearl Jam fans always think in terms of setlists, what will or won't work in a live setting, or what "brings the show to a halt"? And describing this song as "electronica" will get you laughed right out of the EDM convention
