So, I just listened to this w/ headphones for the first time, and .... wow there's some cool details and Ed's vocal delivery on top of Matt's super cool beat really makes sense. I can really tell that each band member played a specific role in the song.

Color me surprised, at the band and RM. I was thoroughly expecting the RM folk to say, as a consensus "I wanted something different, but I wanted MY different, not this!". I was dreading coming on here and reading the reaction and thought it would ruin my journey in discovering this song. Well, it hasn't and I'll eat my words for a bit.

This song is a grower. There's lots to dig into here, and I'm barely there in really understanding it, particularly Ed's lyrics and delivery and Matt's beat. It's just a jarring juxtaposition to hear our dude's voice over synths like this. I looked at the title and the name of the band underneath it while listening and grinned. This is interesting for these guys and definitely worth revisiting alot. I'm really happy they tried this and feel very fortunate to be a fan of a band we can go along for rides like this. Even more encouraging is this theme of collaboration that is coming up in the band members' comments. This isn't just the band working up a version of one the guys' songs, this is them really collaborating. I'm gonna guess Jeff was driving that aspect. I'm totally down for this journey.

Great post and agree the comments I saw from Jeff regarding experimentation and collaboration and the album overall are probably the most encouraging PJ-related 'news' I've read in the last decade (no joke). As someone else said, expectations for the album are almost unfairly high now....

After three consecutive albums that were just meh, I had very low expectations for the band and its future. But, I am really digging this song. It gets better and better with each listen. I'm excited that it's an awesome tune that doesn't sound like a "Pearl Jam song." Similar to my excitement when No Code and Yield were released. I hope the rest of the album can keep up with this.

I don't remember playing a new PJ song this many times, and loving it more and more/discovering new things each time.

It's groovy, funky, and I find myself tapping my foot & bopping my head.

I just hope it doesn't stick out too oddly amongst the rest of the album, however, Stone's new quote on Zane Lowe has brought me slightly closer back to reality, but i hope we're wrong and the album is out there. The 57m tracklist is very intriguing!

Please leak before I see them in Quebec, and I hope we have GAs.

Did someone post the track lengths somewhere? I saw the track list on itunes this morning but only the single had a track length. 57 mins would be awesome; one of my hopes for this album (especially w/ BO'B out of the picture) is that the songs have some room to breathe/expand if that makes any sense

One thing I find pretty interesting about this song (and fairly unique for PJ) is that it doesn't build itself around (or even include) a big Eddie vocal moment. Even some of the songs I love the most, like All or None, Parting Ways, Sleight of Hand, or stuff like that, often builds to a bit of a crescendo in Eddie's vocals; this song is entirely built around an Eddie vocal that doesn't ever really attempt to do that. I like that they were able to write a song like that, and I especially like that they wanted to lead off the rollout for the record with it. I just can't imagine them making a choice like that even a few years ago.
