Why do some Pearl Jam fans always think in terms of setlists, what will or won't work in a live setting, or what "brings the show to a halt"? What a weird way to approach art

i don't mean it that way. i was just using that as an example of how so many PJ fans on here seem to dislike the very style/songs that made them popular in the first place: hook-laden, guitar solo, emotive rock songs. i realize they've done that very well numerous times but guess what - that's been happening for 70 years. perhaps there are still really good songs like that out there to be written? i'm not saying i hate DOTC but i find it nowhere near what i love about PJ.

I'm not a fan of DOTC either but I think it is cool that they're trying something new for them, especially after what could be their career nadir ("Can't Deny Me"). Those old songs aren't going to disappear from their repertoire.

CDM was not good. does that help my alternative/indie street crew with the board?

i'm just very surprised at how much this board seems to rips on the majority of music they've put out that isn't weird or unconventional. few notable exceptions, like stip, who appreciate that these guys have tried different flavors of the same genre - that that is their bread and butter - and that maybe venturing out to a completely different genre is going to put a lot of people off. i wouldn't be Cardi B fan and be stoked she decided to change it up and sing a country song. i wouldn't call that brave or ambitious. some artists thrive at something and and history has shown much of the time when they try to reach for something uncomfortable it comes off contrived and just plain poor. why this board is gaga for what PJ doesn't do best is beyond me.

I think your analysis is a little off. I can’t speak for all of RM, but I do know that the 90s material is highly loved around here. Typical things are Vitalogy, Go, Dave A, and there’s big fans of all the pre-Riot Act albums. Even every time S/T comes up, there’s gyus falling all over it.

It’s fair to say that Backspacer, Lightning Bolt and other newish releases like CDM, Ole or recent Christmas Singles, often gets poorly rated. But that is because posters genuinely feel that these are much weaker than previous releases.

I don’t know much about Cardi B. But if she released two albums, that many considered to be poor, and then released a killer song, I’m sure many of her fans would love it, even if it was a little different.

I don't think I posted at all in the 2010s though, so it's great to be sufficiently excited by something that the band has released that I want to post again. I know this just echoes what so many other have said, but I really didn't think the band had anything as out of their comfort zone as DOTC left in them.

Stone's comments about the rest of Gigaton have me a bit worried, but I'm hoping that we're supposed to interpret his quote as three things (some variety, some straightforward rockers, and some ballads) rather than two (variety consisting of straightforward rockers and ballads). Somehow it doesn't make sense to me that the band would realize that it's a good idea to keep "Can't Deny Me" off the album and also realize that DOTC is a compelling first single, but then go ahead and fill the rest of the album with generic short punkish rock songs anyway.

Definitely not electronica/EDM but press does want to highlight the more repetitive groove as "electronic" even though I can't see this as anything other than new wave, which is still rock. It is the first time they've used a synth (I think?) but this isn't Radiohead releasing Kid A.

Listening to the Stone interview now:

- Up and down recording but had a good time recording it. After they were done were proud of what they had accomplished.
- DOTC is the outer edge of something they haven't tried before. Definitely some straight ahead rock songs, some very spare and simple ballads.

Reminds me a little of his quote about S/T when he was on the promotion trail for that back in 2006 (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... sc-125712/):

“A couple of rock songs, a couple of ballads — it’s not rocket science. We’re proud of the songs, and we think they have a chance to do a little better commercially.”

I wanted a doors album along the lines of the tunes LA Woman, Riders on the Storm, When the Music's Over and The End. How likely was to receive that imagined gift? Highly unlikely but i bought a jim Morrison wig anyway and have been practicing my hallucinogenic sex symbol stare. I think I almost have it down. Next stop, finding the best doors cover band then it's off to Paris. Blonde balayage!

No shit! But the album length alone gives me hope. We know its 57 minutes....the two songs we are familiar with probably add up to 7-8 minutes so close to 50 minutes for the 10 remaining songs.
